Pseudogastromyzon laticeps, the Purple Fin Hillstream Loach, is a striking torrent specialist from the fast-flowing hill streams of Guangdong Province in southern China — a fish whose flattened, disc-like body, striking purple-tinged fins, and suction-disc pectoral arrangement are all direct answers to life in white water. Endemic to the Longjin He drainage and assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, it is rarely seen in the western hobby and poorly suited to anything but a mature, cool, powerfully oxygenated river tank. In an appropriate setup it is a highly rewarding sight; placed in a warm, still, or newly cycled aquarium, it starves and suffocates within weeks.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudogastromyzon laticeps was described by Chen and Zheng in 1980 and belongs to the family Gastromyzontidae — a group sometimes treated as a subfamily of Balitoridae but now frequently recognised at family level, covering the hillstream loaches of southern China, Southeast Asia, and the Sunda Islands. FishBase lists the species under Gastromyzontidae (Balitoridae sensu lato), and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for its valid name and placement.

The genus Pseudogastromyzon groups several torrent loaches from southern China and Vietnam, all sharing the characteristic depressed body plan and modified pectoral and pelvic fins that allow them to cling to bare rock in fast current. The epithet laticeps — 'broad-headed' in Latin — refers to the notably flattened, wide head characteristic of this species. Common trade names that have appeared include 'Purple Fin Hillstream Loach' and 'Purple Fin Sucker', both referencing the distinctive coloration of the dorsal and caudal fins.

Morphology

Pseudogastromyzon laticeps reaches a maximum standard length of around 2.5 in (2.5 in). The body is strongly dorso-ventrally flattened — almost pancake-like when viewed from above — with a wide, rounded head and a streamlined taper toward the tail. The pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and laterally expanded, acting together as a suction disc that locks the fish to smooth rock in torrential flow; this is not a fin modification found in botiid or kuhli loaches, but a specialisation unique to the rheophilic hillstream group.

The most visually distinctive feature is the colouration: the dorsal fin and caudal fin carry a striking purple to violet flush, standing out against a base of drab brown-grey with subtle darker banding or mottling that provides camouflage over rock. As in related hillstream loaches, the skin is smooth and nearly scaleless in texture, making the fish sensitive to medications — particularly copper-based treatments — in the same way as other poorly-scaled loaches. There is no erectile suborbital spine of the botiid type; hillstream loaches of this family lack that character.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Longjin He drainage in Guangdong Province, southern China. Its extent of occurrence is estimated at approximately 20,0 mi², and it occupies fast-flowing, clear, oxygen-saturated hill streams over substrates of gravel, water-worn pebbles, and bare rock. These are cool, high-gradient watercourses where current velocities are high enough to keep the water perpetually charged with dissolved oxygen and to prevent fine sediment settling on the rock surfaces — the very surfaces the fish grazes for food.

Water chemistry in these streams is typically soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral. Temperatures are cooler than in the lowland tropical rivers that most aquarium fish inhabit: the Seriously Fish profile cites a working range of 66–75 °F, well below the 79–82 °F common in tropical community tanks. This is a species of upland torrents, not warm lowland rivers, and any care regime that ignores the temperature and flow requirements will fail.

Feeding

Pseudogastromyzon laticeps is primarily an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps the biofilm of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and associated microinvertebrates from the surface of rocks in fast current. This is not simply 'algae-eating' in the sense of tidying a glass panel; the fish depends on a thick, mature, continuous biofilm as its principal energy source, supplemented in nature by small drifting invertebrates picked from the current.

In the aquarium, the practical implication is severe: this species starves in a newly set-up or frequently disturbed tank that lacks a developed biofilm on its rocks and substrate. Keepers must establish the tank for weeks or months before introducing the fish, ensuring the rockscape is colonised. Supplemental feeding with small live or frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm — and sinking vegetable matter such as blanched courgette or spinach helps sustain the fish between biofilm grazes, but cannot replace a mature biofilm surface as the dietary foundation.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Pseudogastromyzon laticeps is subtle and difficult to assess reliably in normal tank conditions. Females are typically rounder-bodied when in breeding condition, but both sexes share the same flattened body plan and colouration, making confident sexing difficult. In related hillstream loaches, males may show minor differences in head shape or fin development, but no strongly diagnostic characters have been documented for this species specifically.

The Seriously Fish profile notes that males construct substrate nests, after which females deposit eggs that the males fertilise and cover lightly with substrate material. This is an unusual level of nest-tending behaviour for a hillstream loach — most genera scatter eggs passively over rock surfaces — and suggests that males do exercise some minimal site-related activity, though sustained parental care is not recorded after spawning.

Breeding

Pseudogastromyzon laticeps has been spawned in aquaria, though it is far from routinely bred and is not yet established in the western hobby trade. According to the Seriously Fish account, males prepare a nest site on the substrate, females deposit eggs, and the male fertilises and loosely covers them; eggs hatch in 4 to 14 days, and fry emerge at approximately 0.5 in. No sustained parental care follows hatching.

Successful spawning requires the conditions that support the species in general: a mature tank with well-developed biofilm, cool temperatures (64–75 °F), very high flow and dissolved oxygen, and a mixed substrate of fine gravel, sand, and smooth rocks. These are exacting requirements that most community setups cannot meet, and the species is not bred in significant numbers. Hobbyists who do achieve spawning typically do so in dedicated species tanks where flow, oxygenation, and biofilm development have been prioritised from the outset.

In the aquarium

Pseudogastromyzon laticeps is not a fish for a general community aquarium and is not yet common in the western hobby. It demands conditions that most tanks cannot provide: cool water (64–75 °F), turnover of at least 10 times the tank volume per hour via an oversized filter and supplemental powerheads directed across rocks, a pH of 6.0–7.5, and very high dissolved oxygen. A minimum footprint of 75 × 12 in is advisable; wider and longer is better, as horizontal territory over rock surfaces matters more than depth. The substrate should be a mix of fine gravel, sand, and smooth water-worn rocks — the kind that develops a genuine biofilm coat over weeks of maturation.

The fish should be kept in groups of six or more. Like many hillstream loaches, individuals in small numbers can become territorial over prime grazing spots on limited rock surfaces; a larger group distributes that tension. Being near-scaleless, the species is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full standard doses of many treatments — half-doses and copper-free alternatives are the default when disease treatment is unavoidable. The most common cause of failure is temperature and flow: placed in a warm, still, or under-filtered tank, the fish declines rapidly through oxygen depletion and starvation as the biofilm thins. Get those two parameters right first, and the rest of the care is straightforward.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudogastromyzon laticeps as Near Threatened in June 2023, under criteria B1b(iii,v) — a range-restricted species whose habitat quality and population size are inferred to be declining. The species is endemic to the Longjin He drainage in Guangdong Province, China, with an extent of occurrence of approximately 20,0 mi²; that restricted range makes it inherently vulnerable to localised habitat degradation.

The primary pressures on hill-stream loach habitats across southern China are water abstraction, damming for hydro-electric power, agricultural runoff, and the siltation that accompanies upland land-use change — all of which reduce the fast, clear, oxygenated torrent water this species requires. The aquarium trade is a secondary concern: the species is not established in the western hobby in significant numbers and wild collection for export is not thought to be a major driver. Continued monitoring of the Longjin He watershed and the broader Guangdong hill-stream community will be necessary to understand whether the population is stable or continuing to decline.
