Pseudogastromyzon myersi is a compact hillstream loach from the rapid, oxygen-rich hill streams of peninsular Malaysia, described by Albert Herre in 1932 from the state of Perak. Like every member of its genus it is built for life in torrent water: the body is strongly flattened top-to-bottom, and the modified lips and paired fins form a sucker that locks the fish to bare rock while the current races around it. At 2–2.5 in total length it is a quietly beautiful fish — patterned in warm brown and cream to match the stones it clings to — but it is a specialist to its core. It demands cool, fast, highly oxygenated water and a mature biofilm of algae and diatoms to graze, and it will quietly starve or suffocate in the warm, still community tank it is so often sold into. Kept correctly, in a dedicated hillstream river tank with strong flow, it is a fascinating and long-lived aquarium fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudogastromyzon myersi was described by Albert William Christian Theodore Herre in 1932, with the type locality recorded as Perak, peninsular Malaysia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists it as a valid species in the genus Pseudogastromyzon, with no junior synonyms on record. Herre was a prolific American ichthyologist based in the Philippines who described numerous Southeast Asian cypriniform fishes during the first half of the twentieth century, and myersi is named in honour of the American ichthyologist George Sprague Myers.

The genus Pseudogastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream or torrent loaches — within the superfamily Cobitoidea. This is a distinct, speciose group of rheophilic fishes that colonised the fast-water rivers of South and Southeast Asia; Pseudogastromyzon is one of roughly twenty recognized balitorid genera. The family has been extensively revised over the past three decades as molecular systematics reordered the old Balitoridae sensu lato, but Pseudogastromyzon has remained a stable, well-defined genus throughout those rearrangements.

Morphology

Pseudogastromyzon myersi is strongly flattened in the dorsoventral plane — the body is almost disc-like in cross-section, a form that places the fish in intimate contact with the rock surface it clings to. The head is broad and depressed, with a subterminal mouth whose fleshy, modified lips function together with the flattened paired fins to grip the substrate against fast current. The pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged, held out horizontally and pressed flat against rock; the fish moves by a combination of sucker-grip and short, darting slides rather than free swimming.

Adult size is 1.5–2 in standard length, or roughly 2–2.5 in total length — a small fish. The dorsal pattern is a warm brown to grey-brown ground marked with darker spots, blotches or a reticulated network that provides effective camouflage against the sandy, algae-streaked boulders of its native streams. The flanks are paler. Like other balitorid hillstream loaches the skin carries minute, deeply embedded scales and the general surface feels effectively smooth; there is no prominent erectile suborbital spine of the kind seen in botiid loaches. The body form and small size make it easy to distinguish from the larger, more robust Gastromyzon and Glaniopsis of Borneo.

Habitat

Pseudogastromyzon myersi is native to the rapid hill streams and clear, fast-flowing tributaries of peninsular Malaysia, with the type locality in Perak. It occupies the same rheotactic niche across its range: shallow, swift runs over exposed bedrock, boulder, cobble and pebble in well-forested upland catchments, where dissolved oxygen is close to saturation, current velocity is high and the water is cool and extremely clear.

The bottom is typically a mosaic of bare rock and fine gravel with heavy diatom and algal growth on stable surfaces — the biofilm that constitutes the fish's primary food resource. Temperature in these streams typically runs between 14 and 72 °F, well below the ambient tropical air temperature, owing to altitude, shade and rapid flow. The pH is mildly acidic to neutral (6.5–7.5). These are not lowland, warm, slow-water rivers: they are upland torrents, and the fish is tightly adapted to that environment. Any aquarium that departs significantly from cool, fast, oxygenated water over rock will not sustain this species.

Feeding

Pseudogastromyzon myersi is an aufwuchs grazer: it rasps biofilm — the community of algae, diatoms, detrital particles and associated microorganisms — from the surfaces of rocks using its modified, fleshy lips. This is its primary and essential food source in the wild, and the dietary behaviour drives one of the most important points of care in the aquarium: the fish requires a mature, established rockscape covered in visible algal and diatom growth, and it will slowly starve in a bare, newly set-up or excessively clean tank where no biofilm exists.

In addition to biofilm, the species will graze on blanched greens such as courgette, cucumber and spinach provided in contact with the bottom, and will accept small frozen invertebrate foods such as bloodworm and Cyclops. It does not reliably eat sinking flake or large algae wafers on their own. The keeper's task is to ensure a constant, self-renewing biofilm resource — strong lighting on mature rock is one of the most effective approaches — supplemented by targeted small feedings of frozen and vegetable foods. Do not assume that green growth in a tank not specifically managed for it will be sufficient to feed this fish long-term.

Mating

Very little is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Pseudogastromyzon myersi specifically. By analogy with other hillstream loach genera and with what limited captive observations exist for related species, the sexes are externally very similar and may be difficult to distinguish except when females are visibly gravid — ripe females typically appear somewhat broader-bodied and more rounded in the ventral region than males of the same length.

Mating behaviour in hillstream loaches is inferred to be tied to seasonal changes in flow and water temperature that accompany monsoon and post-monsoon periods in their native streams. Whether Pseudogastromyzon specifically requires strong seasonal cues — temperature drop, increased flow rate — to ripen and spawn is not established in the aquarium literature. The practical difficulty of sexing small, cryptic, current-dependent fish in a tank environment means that few attempts at deliberate breeding have been reported.

Breeding

Pseudogastromyzon myersi is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria, and no detailed spawning accounts appear in the aquarium literature for this species. The genus as a whole has produced only occasional and fragmentary captive breeding reports. Where spawning has occurred in related hillstream genera — notably Sewellia — it has taken place in mature, high-flow river tanks with a well-established biofilm substrate, with eggs scattered or pressed among fine gravel and stones in the current; there is no parental care, and the larvae and juveniles require infusoria-scale foods in the early stages.

It is reasonable to expect that Pseudogastromyzon myersi would follow the egg-scattering, no-parental-care pattern common to balitorid hillstream loaches, and that spawning — if achieved at all — would depend on a mature tank with sustained strong flow and biofilm, a good sex ratio, and possibly seasonal temperature and flow variation to stimulate ripening. The honest position for this species is that it is not bred in the aquarium in any reliable or repeatable way. The fish in the trade are wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Pseudogastromyzon myersi is a dedicated hillstream specialist, and the aquarium it needs is correspondingly specific. The single most important requirement is strong, continuous water flow — a river-tank arrangement using powerheads or a dedicated river-flow pump to create fast, unidirectional current across a rocky, open bottom. It cannot tolerate the warm, still or gently-filtered water of a standard tropical community tank; temperatures above 75 °F cause chronic stress, and stagnation quickly depletes the dissolved oxygen the fish depends on. A dedicated hillstream tank, kept at 61–72 °F and heavily aerated, is the correct environment.

The second critical requirement is an established biofilm. Rock surfaces must be colonised before the fish is introduced, and strong lighting over the main grazing area will encourage algal and diatom growth. Because the fish is small, relatively slow-moving in still water and easily outcompeted at feeding, supplementary foods — blanched greens anchored near the current, small frozen foods delivered directly into the flow — should be offered regularly. A largely open, sand-and-boulder layout is appropriate; the fish does not require cave structures but benefits from a few flat stones under which it can shelter.

Pseudogastromyzon myersi is generally peaceful and can be kept in a small group or with other hillstream species that share its flow and temperature requirements. Being effectively scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive reduced doses of any treatment; it may be the first fish to show signs of ich or external infection in a tank where temperature has crept upward, so water temperature control is both a welfare and a disease-prevention measure.

Conservation

Pseudogastromyzon myersi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no official conservation category; we record it here as Not Evaluated rather than assume a status. Many narrow-range hillstream loaches endemic to the hill streams of peninsular Malaysia and the surrounding region have been overlooked in global assessments despite being highly habitat-specific and potentially vulnerable to the pressures that affect their catchments.

The species' dependence on cool, clear, fast-flowing upland water makes it inherently sensitive to any degradation of stream quality — sedimentation from deforestation, agricultural and plantation run-off, hydroelectric impoundment and water abstraction all threaten the clean, oxygenated torrent habitat it requires. The trade in Pseudogastromyzon myersi is supplied entirely by wild collection; there is no captive breeding in commercial quantities. The scale of collection pressure on this particular species is not formally documented, but for any stream-endemic hillstream loach traded from Southeast Asia, sustainable sourcing depends on the long-term integrity of intact upland forest catchments.
