Taxonomy & naming
Pseudogastromyzon cheni was described by the Chinese ichthyologist Liang in 1942 and placed in the genus Pseudogastromyzon, which it has retained ever since. The genus belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream loaches or river loaches — within the superfamily Cobitoidea. Balitoridae has been substantially reshuffled by molecular work since the 1990s, with many genera formerly scattered across Homalopteridae, Gastromyzontidae and Balitoridae sensu lato now reorganised; the Catalog of Fishes places Pseudogastromyzon firmly within Balitoridae, and that arrangement is followed here.
Within the genus, P. cheni is distinguished from the superficially similar Pseudogastromyzon myersi by morphological measurements: in P. cheni the distance between the pectoral-fin origin and the ventral-fin origin is greater than the distance between the ventral origin and the anus, a ratio that reverses in P. myersi. Several other Pseudogastromyzon species share similar patterning, so care is needed in identification when fish arrive as mixed shipments.
Morphology
Pseudogastromyzon cheni is built for one environment: water moving fast enough to strip poorly anchored organisms off exposed rock. The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, with a broad, fleshy head and a streamlined posterior that narrows toward a short, forked tail. The pectoral and pelvic fins are greatly expanded and held horizontally, functioning together as a ventral suction pad that the fish uses to cling to smooth rock and boulder surfaces against strong current.
At rest the colour pattern is a mosaic of dark-brown reticulation or saddling over a pale tan ground, providing effective camouflage against a gravel and cobble substrate. Sexually active males, however, display conspicuously red to orange dorsal fins — the most reliable field mark for separating the sexes. Maximum total length is recorded at 2–2.5 in; most aquarium specimens reach 2 in. The suborbital spine characteristic of many cobitoid loaches is present in a reduced form, and the body surface has the near-scaleless texture common to the group, with important implications for disease treatment.
Habitat
In the wild, Pseudogastromyzon cheni is found throughout China, occupying the fast-flowing, boulder-strewn headwater streams and hill torrents that characterise its preferred habitat. The water in these streams is cool — typically 68–77 °F, and often toward the lower end of that range in upland reaches — clear, and saturated with dissolved oxygen from the continual turbulence. The substrate is hard: exposed bedrock, large boulders and cobble paved with a thick coat of algae, diatoms and biofilm that constitutes the fish's primary food source.
This is not a floodplain or lowland river fish. Its rheophilic specialisations — flattened body, suction fins, tolerance for high-velocity flow — commit it to a habitat type that is physiologically demanding even for stream specialists. It is not found in still, warm, or oxygen-depleted water, and any aquarium setup that replicates those conditions is incompatible with the fish's survival.
Feeding
Pseudogastromyzon cheni is an aufwuchs grazer — it forages by rasping filamentous cyanobacteria, stalked diatoms, and biofilm from hard surfaces using a modified, scraping mouth. Research on Pseudogastromyzon feeding shows that long filamentous algae are less heavily ingested than the microfloral crust of the biofilm itself; the fish is not a simple macroalgae-eater but a precision grazer on the fine-textured microbial and algal layer that colonises stable rock surfaces in clean, fast water.
In the aquarium, a mature, biologically established tank with algae-covered rocks and glass is essential for maintaining this species. Fish placed into a new, bare, or recently cleaned tank will graze surfaces down to nothing and then starve — this is the single most common cause of loss. Hard surfaces must never all be cleaned at once; rotating which surfaces are left alone preserves the grazing crop. Beyond biofilm, the diet can be supplemented with algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched greens such as spinach and zucchini, and frozen foods including bloodworm and Mysis shrimp, which provide the small microinvertebrate component present in wild diets.
Mating
Sexing Pseudogastromyzon cheni is more straightforward than in many loaches. Males display intensely coloured red dorsal fins during courtship and become noticeably active in the presence of ripe females; females in spawning condition are visibly plumper through the abdomen. The courtship sequence is elaborate by hillstream loach standards: the male clears a spawning pit beneath the edge of a pebble or cobble using sweeping movements of the tail, then performs a fin-fluttering display around the female, circling and weaving until she signals acceptance.
Once a pair is established at a pit, courtship intensifies into a synchronised sequence in which both fish enter the pit alternately, with fertilisation occurring during these alternating visits. The male may continue to be involved at the pit margin briefly after spawning, but the adults take no lasting parental interest in the eggs or emerging fry.
Breeding
Among loaches, Pseudogastromyzon cheni stands out as one of the more achievable species to spawn in the home aquarium — a significant distinction in a family where breeding success is generally rare and most species in the trade are either wild-caught or produced commercially with hormone induction. It is an egg-scatterer with no true parental care: fertilised eggs are deposited and concealed beneath pebbles or cobble, covered lightly with substrate by the male, and then left. Hatching occurs in approximately two weeks, and juveniles reach sexual maturity at around six months.
The prerequisites are a mature, high-flow, heavily oxygenated river-style tank with a natural pebble and cobble bottom that provides both grazing surfaces and spawning sites. Conditioning the fish well on varied foods prior to a breeding attempt, and ensuring that males and females are in good colour and body condition, markedly improves success. The fry are tiny and require a mature biofilm layer to graze from the outset; newly set-up tanks cannot support them. Success has been reported by aquarists maintaining the species in appropriate conditions over extended periods, making P. cheni an accessible long-term breeding project for keepers prepared to meet its water-quality demands.
In the aquarium
Pseudogastromyzon cheni is an advanced species that rewards keepers who understand what it needs but declines quickly in the hands of those who do not. The single most important requirement is water movement: a flow rate that would be considered extreme in a standard community tank is merely adequate here. Powerheads or circulation pumps arranged to create a strong, directed current across a rock and cobble layout are standard, paired with a filter system sized to maintain near-zero ammonia and nitrite and high dissolved-oxygen levels. Water temperature should be maintained in the range of 68–75 °F; extended periods above 75 °F cause physiological stress and suppress immune function, making the fish vulnerable to disease.
A group of four to six individuals is preferable to a singleton or pair. Intraspecific competition for prime grazing spots on rock surfaces is normal and generally harmless, providing that the tank is large enough and decorated densely enough with flat boulders, smooth cobble and slate to give every fish a territory and a feeding station. Rocks should be allowed to develop a visible green or brown algal coat before introduction; a bare tank is a starvation environment.
Being effectively scaleless, P. cheni is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive no more than half the standard dose of any treatment, with careful monitoring for signs of toxicity. It is not a particularly ich-prone species compared with botiids, but its thin skin means that any chemical exposure is magnified. The species coexists well with other cool-water, fast-water species at similar size, and it is entirely peaceful toward tankmates that do not compete for the same rock surfaces.
Conservation
Pseudogastromyzon cheni is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, a reflection of its broad distribution across China and its tolerance of a range of clear-water stream habitats. It is widespread in its native range and does not face the acute threats that confront stream endemics with very restricted distributions.
The primary pressures on hillstream loach communities across China are habitat-based: deforestation and land-use change in upland catchments, siltation of clear gravelly streambeds, water extraction and impoundment for agriculture and hydropower, and water-quality degradation from agricultural runoff and effluent. These pressures act broadly across the guild of rheophilic fishes rather than targeting any single species, and P. cheni's relatively wide range provides some buffer. Fish for the aquarium trade are wild-collected, as captive production is not practiced commercially, but demand is modest and there is no evidence of trade-driven population decline. Maintaining high water quality in the source streams remains the critical conservation priority for this and related hillstream species.
