Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis is a small hillstream loach described by Zheng in 1981 from fast-flowing hill streams of the Lianjiang river system in Jiangxi Province, southern China. Built like all its balitorid kin to cling to rock in swift, oxygen-rich water, it is a flattened, torrent-adapted fish that grazes biofilm and diatoms from stone surfaces — a lifestyle that demands cool, fast, pristine water and a mature rockscape colonised by algae. It is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and data on the wild population remain sparse, reflecting how little-studied many small Chinese hillstream endemics still are.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis was described by Zheng in 1981 and is placed in the family Balitoridae, the hillstream and river loaches. The genus Pseudogastromyzon is one of several flattened, torrent-adapted genera within Balitoridae and is distributed across southern China and adjacent drainages. The species epithet lianjiangensis is a toponym referring to the Lianjiang river system in Jiangxi Province, where the type specimens were collected.

The genus name combines the Greek pseudo- (false) with Gastromyzon, a related Bornean hillstream genus — together meaning something like "false Gastromyzon", reflecting the morphological convergence between these torrent-adapted lineages. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name; older literature may use variant combinations. No synonyms are currently recorded in the aquarium literature. Data on this species remain sparse and it is not represented in mainstream aquarium trade databases.

Morphology

Like all members of the family Balitoridae, Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis is strongly flattened dorsoventrally — the body is depressed and streamlined, forming a biological sucker that holds the fish fast to rock surfaces in the strongest currents. The underside of the head and paired fins are broad and flat, functioning alongside the pectoral and pelvic fins to maintain purchase on the substrate without an adhesive disc. The skin is effectively scaleless to the touch, with scales deeply embedded and reduced, making the fish sensitive to copper-based medications and harsh treatments.

The genus Pseudogastromyzon typically spans three to eight centimetres standard length. Precise measurements for lianjiangensis are not recorded in available sources, but adults are likely small — consistent with the size range of the genus. Coloration in balitorids of this type is generally cryptic: browns, tans, and mottled patterns that blend with the rocky substrate. No suborbital spine has been reported for this genus, distinguishing it from botiid loaches.

Habitat

Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis inhabits fast-flowing, rocky hill streams of the Lianjiang river system in Jiangxi Province, southern China. This is the classic hillstream loach environment: clear, highly oxygenated, cool torrent water rushing over exposed bedrock and cobble, typically at altitude, where oxygen saturation is high and organic load is low. Water temperatures in the source region are cool, with records for similar southern Chinese highland streams suggesting a range roughly between 16 and 72 °F, dropping further in winter months.

The fish occupies the benthos of riffles and rapids, pressed flat against the upstream face of stones and gravel where the current is strongest — the zone with the densest biofilm and diatom growth. It is not a species of still water, slow lowland rivers or warm tropical conditions. Substrate is bare rock, cobble and coarse gravel; there is little aquatic vegetation in the torrent zone it favours.

Feeding

Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer. Like all flattened hillstream balitorids it feeds by rasping algae, diatoms, micro-organisms and fine organic particles from the surfaces of rocks using the fleshy, modified lips adapted for this purpose. In the wild this grazing is continuous and opportunistic, moving steadily across rock faces in the torrent zone.

In the aquarium this diet is the species' most demanding requirement. It will not sustain itself on conventional flake or granule food alone; it needs a mature tank with biofilm-covered rockwork, supplemented by high-quality sinking algae wafers, blanched spinach or courgette, and occasional offerings of small frozen foods such as daphnia or baby brine shrimp. A newly set-up tank with bare rock and no biofilm will slowly starve this fish — this is the single most common way hillstream loaches are lost in captivity. Allow the tank to mature for several months before adding specimens.

Mating

No specific mating observations have been recorded for Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis in the aquarium literature. In the broader genus Pseudogastromyzon and in Balitoridae generally, sexing is reported to be difficult: mature females may be fuller-bodied when ripe, and males of some species in the family show subtle differences in fin development or coloration, but the two sexes are otherwise very similar externally.

Spawning in hillstream balitorids — where documented at all — appears to be tied to seasonal changes in flow, temperature, and water volume, mirroring the natural flood pulse of cool upland streams. Recreating these cues in captivity is challenging; the literature on Pseudogastromyzon specifically is silent on courtship behaviour, and observations from closely related genera suggest that successful spawning requires sustained high flow and a well-established, mature biotope.

Breeding

Breeding of Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis in home aquaria has not been documented in the available literature. The species belongs to Balitoridae, a family in which a few genera — most notably Sewellia — have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks, where the fish deposit eggs among stones and gravel with no subsequent parental care. Whether Pseudogastromyzon will follow the same pattern under the right conditions is unknown; the honest answer is that it is very rarely kept and essentially never bred in captivity.

For related hillstream balitorids that have spawned in aquaria, the typical outcome is a small clutch of eggs laid in a crevice or among gravel, with the adults taking no further interest. Fry, if they hatch, require microscopic biofilm and infusoria for their first foods. Given the overall rarity of this species in the hobby and the near-absence of keeper records, any breeding attempt would represent a genuine contribution to knowledge.

In the aquarium

Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis is a specialist fish suited to a dedicated hillstream biotope, not a general community aquarium. The tank must supply cool, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water — a powerful powerhead or wavemaker directed across a bed of smooth cobble and flat stones is the minimum; a full river manifold is ideal. Temperature should be kept in the range of 61–72 °F; at warm tropical temperatures (above 75–77 °F) oxygen-carrying capacity drops and the fish deteriorates. A chiller may be needed in warmer climates.

The rockscape must be mature: biofilm and green algae are the fish's primary food source, and a tank that has been running for at least three to four months with strong lighting over the rocks will have the surface growth this species needs. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched greens and small frozen foods several times a week. Because the skin is essentially scaleless, the fish is sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-dose medications; use half-doses and copper-free products if disease arises. This species is rarely available in the trade and its care requirements — cool water, very high flow, mature biofilm — mean it is best kept by experienced aquarists already running a hillstream setup.

Keep in groups if possible; hillstream loaches in general are not aggressive toward conspecifics in a sufficiently large, flow-rich tank, and a small group provides more natural behaviour than a solitary specimen.

Conservation

Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no conservation category is currently assigned. It is endemic to the Lianjiang drainage of Jiangxi Province, southern China — a restricted native range that makes it inherently vulnerable to localised threats. Small-stream endemics in southern China face a range of pressures including agricultural runoff, siltation of clear torrent habitats, damming or water abstraction from upland streams, and the steady expansion of intensive land use in river catchments.

The species is essentially absent from the aquarium trade and there is no indication that collection for the hobby constitutes a significant pressure. Data on wild population size and trends are absent, which is itself a concern: the species' status remains unknown. Given its restricted range and the degradation of similar highland-stream habitats across the region, formal assessment and population surveys would be a valuable conservation step.
