Taxonomy & naming
Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus was described by the French ichthyologist Henri Émile Sauvage in 1878, hence the parenthetical authority; its original placement was in an earlier combination before it was referred to Pseudogastromyzon. An older synonym, Psilorhynchus fasciatus, appears in some historical literature and in aggregator records, but the valid name accepted by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus.
The genus Pseudogastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream or river loaches — a group distributed across the fast streams of South and East Asia. Pseudogastromyzon is centered on southern China and the Pearl River drainage, distinguishing it from the Bornean genus Gastromyzon (to which it looks superficially similar) and from the Indochinese Sewellia. The family-level placement of Balitoridae has been revised repeatedly as molecular systematics reshaped Cobitoidea; older texts may list hillstream loaches under Homalopteridae, now treated as a synonym.
Morphology
The banded hillstream loach reaches approximately 3 in standard length, making it a moderately sized member of its genus. The body is strongly depressed — flattened top-to-bottom rather than laterally — with a broad head and a rostrum adapted for scraping biofilm from hard substrates. The pectoral and pelvic fins are held horizontally, their combined ventral surface functioning as an adhesive platform against smooth rock in fast current; the fish rests motionless against stone in white-water flow that would dislodge most fish.
The colour pattern gives the species its name: a series of dark transverse bands cross the dorsal surface against a tawny or pale buff ground, providing camouflage against the dappled, algae-covered rock of its native streams. Males develop more prominent nasal tubercles — small fleshy projections around the rostrum — which are the most reliable external sexing character, though subtle in typical aquarium specimens. The skin carries only reduced, deeply embedded scales and is effectively naked to the touch, a feature shared across hillstream loaches that carries real consequences for medication sensitivity.
Habitat
Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus is native to fast-flowing hill streams of southern China, within drainages of the Pearl River system and adjacent coastal rivers. In the wild it occupies the most energetic zones of rocky streams: riffles, cascades and boulder-strewn runs where dissolved oxygen is near saturation and the current is strong enough to keep substrates scoured of silt. Water is cool — typically 68–75 °F — clear, and of medium hardness with a pH in the neutral-to-slightly-alkaline range (around 7.0–8.0).
The fish clings to the upstream face of boulders and rock slabs, grazing the thin layer of algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates that coat every hard surface in well-lit, fast water. This microhabitat is one of the most oxygen-rich and food-rich in a stream, but it demands physiological and morphological commitment: a fish shaped for the torrent cannot function in still, warm, oxygen-depleted water.
Feeding
In nature, Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps biofilm, benthic algae and diatoms from the surface of rock using a specialized, subterminal mouth equipped for abrasive scraping. Associated with this biofilm are small invertebrates (midge larvae, copepods, ostracods) that add protein to an otherwise algae-heavy diet. The fish forages continuously, moving across rock faces in short bursts between anchor-and-rasp feeding bouts.
In the aquarium, this feeding biology has direct consequences for husbandry. A newly set-up tank with bare or uncolonized rock provides virtually nothing for the fish to eat, and individuals placed in such a tank will slowly starve even if they accept commercial foods inconsistently. A mature tank — one where rock, slate, or smooth cobble surfaces have had several months to develop a visible biofilm and algal coating — is a prerequisite, not a luxury. On top of that natural substrate, the diet should be supplemented with algae wafers, sinking small pellets or micro-granules, and regular offerings of blanched greens (cucumber, zucchini, spinach). Frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp are taken and help maintain condition; the fish will also dig in gravel to sieve out settled food particles.
Mating
Males of Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus can be distinguished from females by the more pronounced nasal tubercles that develop around the snout in sexually active males — a characteristic of the genus during breeding condition. Females typically become visibly broader in the abdomen when ripe. Both sexes are territorial to varying degrees: individuals stake out grazing patches on rock faces and actively displace competitors, including conspecifics.
In the wild, breeding is presumed to follow seasonal cues tied to stream flow and temperature shifts — the same monsoon-cycle triggers that drive most Asian hillstream fish. Males likely compete for access to females and suitable spawning sites among the substrate. The fine detail of courtship in this genus in nature is not well documented in the published literature.
Breeding
Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus, like most hillstream loaches, is rarely bred in home aquaria, but spawning has been reported in mature, well-maintained river-style tanks — placing it among the minority of hillstream loaches for which aquarium reproduction is at least documented. It is an egg-scatterer: ripe females deposit eggs among gravel, between stones, or in crevices in strong current, with no parental care afterward. The eggs and any resulting fry must fend for themselves.
For any prospect of spawning, the tank must replicate the species' natural conditions closely: high flow, cool temperatures (68–73 °F), saturated oxygenation, and — critically — a genuinely mature biofilm substrate that can feed newly free-swimming fry, which are too small to take most prepared foods immediately. Even under good conditions, breeding is not reliably achieved, and hobbyists should not expect it as a routine outcome. The supply of this species in the trade typically consists of wild-caught or pond-raised fish from China, not aquarium-bred stock.
In the aquarium
The banded hillstream loach is a cool-water, high-flow specialist, and the single greatest cause of failure with it is placing it in a warm, still community tank. It requires a dedicated river-style setup: a strong directional current generated by a powerhead or wave pump pointed along a bed of smooth boulders, cobbles and slate; water temperature held at 68–75 °F; and continuous high oxygenation — surface agitation from the return or a venturi helps. In still, warm water, Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus suffocates and declines within weeks.
Because the skin is essentially scaleless, this loach is unusually sensitive to medications containing copper and to full-strength doses of many anti-parasitic treatments. At the same time, the cool, oxygen-rich, hard-worked filtration demanded by a river tank tends to keep the fish in robust health when properly maintained, and the fish is not especially disease-prone if its basic needs are met. Use half-doses when medication is unavoidable, remove carbon, and observe closely.
A tank of 23.5–31.5 in in length is a practical minimum for a small group. Keep at least three to five individuals — solitary fish are more easily outcompeted for food and show less of the active, exploratory behaviour that makes the genus rewarding. While territorial at feeding sites, the species generally does not cause serious injury to conspecifics. Suitable tankmates are limited to similarly cool-water, fast-water species: white cloud mountain minnows, smaller hillstream gobies, or other hillstream loaches with compatible requirements. Do not mix with typical tropical community fish that require 79–82 °F.
Conservation
Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no current conservation category; its status here is Not Evaluated. It is a species of fast-flowing hill streams in southern China, a habitat type that faces ongoing pressures from hydroelectric development, stream channelization, agricultural run-off, and urban expansion across its range in Guangdong, Guangxi and adjacent provinces.
The genus Pseudogastromyzon as a whole includes several narrow-range endemics whose populations are poorly quantified, and some species may warrant Vulnerable or Endangered status under IUCN criteria were they to be assessed. For P. fasciatus specifically, no published population assessment is available. Wild collection for the aquarium trade is modest; the species is not a high-volume trade fish. The most significant threats are almost certainly habitat degradation and water-quality decline rather than collection pressure, though data to evaluate this properly are lacking.
