Taxonomy & naming
Sinogastromyzon macrostoma was described in 2010 by Liu, Chen and Yang from specimens collected in southern China. The genus Sinogastromyzon was established by Fang in 1930 and belongs to the family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches, sometimes placed in Gastromyzontidae by authors who split that group from the broader Balitoridae). It is one of several suctorial loach genera endemic to the river drainages of southern China, sitting within the diverse Cobitoidea superfamily alongside the botiids, nemacheilids and cobitids.
The species epithet macrostoma is Latin for "large mouth," referring to the expanded, fleshy mouth that characterises this fish and distinguishes it within the genus. No synonyms or subsequent renames are currently recorded for this species. Because Sinogastromyzon macrostoma was described only in 2010, it remains absent from many reference databases and the details of its original type locality have not been widely reproduced in accessible online literature.
Morphology
Sinogastromyzon macrostoma shares the body plan that defines all members of its genus: the body is strongly flattened top-to-bottom, with paired pectoral and pelvic fins spread wide and held horizontally, forming — with the flat belly — a continuous adhesive surface against rock. The head is broad and depressed; the mouth is large for the genus (hence macrostoma) and positioned ventrally, with thick, fleshy lips adapted for rasping algae and biofilm from hard substrates.
The skin is lightly scaled or nearly naked in appearance, similar to other hillstream balitorids; this makes the fish sensitive to medications and to abrasion. Unlike the botiid loaches, Sinogastromyzon does not carry a prominent erectile suborbital spine, though some dermal structures in balitorids can cause minor netting difficulties. Total length data for this specific species are sparse in accessible literature, but congeners typically reach 1.5–3 in; adults are small, compact torrent fish that spend their lives pressed against rock surfaces in fast current.
Habitat
Sinogastromyzon macrostoma is native to southern China, where it inhabits fast-flowing, clear, shallow hill streams and mountain torrents. The genus is strongly rheophilic — all of its species are tied to well-oxygenated, swift water flowing over rock and gravel substrates at higher elevations, where dissolved oxygen remains high even in warm months. Water temperatures in these streams are typically cool, in the range of approximately 61–72 °F for much of the genus, with some populations exposed to temperatures as low as 54 °F in winter.
The substrate is bare rock or coarse gravel, colonised by periphyton, diatoms and algal biofilm — exactly what the fish's mouth is built to harvest. Leaf litter and fine organic detritus may accumulate in marginal eddies but the core habitat is swift, clear, hard-bottomed torrents. Turbidity, stagnation or silting of streambeds is inimical to the species. Its occurrence is tightly coupled to water quality and dissolved oxygen levels.
Feeding
Sinogastromyzon macrostoma is an obligate aufwuchs grazer. It rasps algae, diatoms and the complex biofilm communities — bacteria, microalgae, protists and organic detritus — that coat rock surfaces in fast-flowing streams. The large mouth and fleshy lips are direct adaptations for this; the fish presses its mouth to the substrate and scrapes rather than picks.
In the aquarium the most common cause of death is starvation in a bare or newly-cycled tank: there is nothing for the fish to graze, and it will not take pellets freely until all other options are exhausted, if at all. A mature, well-lit, rock-heavy aquarium with established algae and biofilm growth is the essential dietary base. Small frozen or live foods — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms — and blanched green vegetables (cucumber, courgette, spinach) supplement the biofilm. Commercial algae wafers, spirulina wafers and biofilm-promoting supplements can help bridge gaps. This is not an easy generic algae-eater: it is a specialist graze that requires patience and a prepared tank.
Mating
Specific data on mating behaviour in Sinogastromyzon macrostoma are absent from accessible literature. Within the genus Sinogastromyzon and the broader hillstream loach complex, sexing can sometimes be accomplished by the plumper abdomen of ripe females and, in some species, by subtle differences in fin shape or dermal texture between males and females; these characters are not well documented for this species.
Conspecific interactions in the genus are generally territorial around feeding patches on rock surfaces. In nature, spawning is believed to coincide with seasonal cues — shifts in water temperature, flow volume and photoperiod associated with monsoon rains or snowmelt in the source streams. A few hillstream loach species (notably Sewellia lineolata) have been observed spawning in mature aquaria with strong flow, but for most Sinogastromyzon the mating ecology in captivity is undocumented.
Breeding
Sinogastromyzon macrostoma has not been bred in the aquarium under documented conditions known from accessible sources. Like most hillstream loaches it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits eggs among stones and coarse gravel in fast-flowing water, with no parental care. A few hillstream loach species have spawned in richly furnished, strongly flowing river-style setups with mature biofilm and natural seasonal cues, and it is not impossible for determined hobbyists to achieve this; but verified accounts for this species do not exist in widely accessible literature.
The honest position is: rarely if ever bred in home aquaria. Captive groups maintained under appropriate cool, fast, oxygen-rich conditions in a mature aquarium with good food availability offer the best prospect of spontaneous spawning, but keepers should not purchase this species with breeding as the primary goal.
In the aquarium
Sinogastromyzon macrostoma demands conditions that most standard tropical community tanks do not provide. The essential requirements are cool water (approximately 61–72 °F), a very high rate of water flow produced by multiple powerheads or a dedicated river-tank manifold, and high dissolved oxygen at all times. Warm, still water that suits most tropical fish will suffocate this species; it is a physiological torrent dweller and cannot adapt to stagnant conditions.
The tank must be mature — at least several months old — with a substantial cover of algae and biofilm on rocks and glass. Bare rock, bare glass or freshly scoured surfaces mean starvation. A sandy or fine-gravel substrate with large, smooth rocks provides both foraging surface and current breaks for the fish to rest in. Being near-scaleless, this fish is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full doses of many treatments; any medication should be used at half dose or less, with heavy aeration and close monitoring. It is best kept with other cool-water, fast-water species of similar size; avoid tankmates that compete aggressively for food, and avoid warm-water tropical fish entirely.
Sinogastromyzon macrostoma is a specialist fish for keepers who have already built and run a cool-water hillstream biotope. It is not a beginner fish and not a substitute for the common Beaufortia or Gastromyzon hillstream loaches in an unprepared community aquarium.
Conservation
Sinogastromyzon macrostoma has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. As a species described only in 2010 from southern China, it is not yet represented in major conservation databases, and its range extent, population size and threat status are unknown from accessible sources.
The broader context for southern Chinese hillstream fish is concerning: these montane drainages are under pressure from dam construction, sand and gravel extraction, water diversion for agriculture and urban use, and agricultural run-off that silts and eutrophicates the clear torrents these species require. Many Sinogastromyzon congeners are narrow endemics restricted to single river drainages, and their standing is poorly known even to science. The aquarium trade in hillstream loaches from China draws on wild-caught stock, since virtually no suctorial hillstream species are produced commercially. Until formal assessment data become available, caution in sourcing is appropriate.
