Sinogastromyzon lixianjiangensis is a small hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae, endemic to the Lixianjiang River drainage — a tributary of the upper Mekong (Lancang) system in Yunnan Province, southern China. Described in 2010 by Liu, Chen and Yang, it is a narrow-range endemic known only from its type locality and has received no common trade name. Like all members of its genus, it is a flattened, disc-bellied torrent specialist that clings to rock faces in fast, cool, oxygen-rich water by suction, rasping biofilm and diatoms from stone surfaces. It has no recorded IUCN assessment but its restricted distribution in a single river drainage makes it inherently vulnerable to any degradation of that watershed.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinogastromyzon lixianjiangensis was described in 2010 by Liu, Chen and Yang from specimens collected at its type locality on the Lixianjiang River (also romanised as Li-Xian-Jiang), a tributary of the Lancang River — the upper Mekong — in Yunnan Province, southern China. The species epithet lixianjiangensis is a toponym, meaning 'of the Lixianjiang', and directly names the river from which the type material was collected.

The genus Sinogastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream loaches, and sits within the superfamily Cobitoidea alongside the true loaches (Cobitidae) and stone loaches (Nemacheilidae). The genus name derives from the Greek sino- (Chinese) and gastromyzon (belly-sucker), naming both the geographic origin and the functional body plan shared by all hillstream loaches. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al., California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid combination and recognises the species as currently described. No synonyms have been published.

Morphology

As a member of Sinogastromyzon and the broader hillstream loach assemblage, S. lixianjiangensis displays the extreme body plan that characterises these rheophilic fishes. The body is strongly depressed — flattened dorso-ventrally — with the ventral surface modified into a broad, smooth contact zone that acts as a friction pad against rock. Paired pectoral and pelvic fins are splayed horizontally and broadened, functioning less as propulsors than as contact organs that increase surface contact on the substrate. The head is blunt, with a ventrally positioned mouth adapted for rasping.

Specific morphometric measurements for this species are not yet published in widely accessible form; size data for the genus broadly suggest small adults, likely under 2.5 in in standard length, though exact maximum size for this species is not confirmed in the available literature. The body is near-scaleless by teleost standards, leaving the skin relatively thin and exposed — a trait that increases sensitivity to medications and water-quality fluctuations shared by hillstream loaches generally.

Habitat

The species is known from the Lixianjiang River drainage, a tributary of the upper Mekong (Lancang) system in Yunnan, southern China. Yunnan's tributary streams of the Mekong are steep, fast-flowing, clear hill torrents that cascade over bedrock and boulders at relatively high elevation. Water temperatures in these streams are cool — Sinogastromyzon habitats typically fall in the range of 61–72 °F, and some high-altitude populations in the genus inhabit water as cool as 54–57 °F. Dissolved oxygen is high owing to the turbulent flow, and substrate is hard — exposed rock faces, cobble, and gravel that support the biofilm community on which the fish feeds.

S. lixianjiangensis is a rheophilic (current-loving) specialist and can be assumed incapable of surviving in slow or stagnant water. Its narrow endemic range — a single river drainage in a single province — means that habitat quality in the Lixianjiang is of direct conservation importance to this species. No confirmed records exist outside that system.

Feeding

Sinogastromyzon lixianjiangensis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. It uses its ventrally positioned, subterminal mouth as a rasping organ, scraping the surface film of microalgae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates from rock faces in flowing water. This mode of feeding is typical of the entire Sinogastromyzon genus and of hillstream loaches broadly.

In the aquarium, the critical feeding point is that this fish cannot survive without an established, mature biofilm. A bare tank, a newly set-up tank, or one kept too clean for algae to accumulate on rocks will starve it. Biofilm and algae growth on smooth rock and glass is a requirement, not a cosmetic problem. Supplementary foods — blanched courgette, spinach, cucumber, and algae wafers pressed against the glass — are accepted once the fish is settled, but no supplement can substitute for a genuine biofilm surface. Small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia or copepods are taken opportunistically and are a valuable addition to the diet.

Mating

No specific mating behaviour has been documented for Sinogastromyzon lixianjiangensis in the wild or in captivity, and the species has no established record in the aquarium trade that might yield observational data. Across the genus and family, hillstream loaches are understood to be egg-scatterers without significant parental investment, relying on fast-flowing, well-oxygenated conditions to develop eggs deposited among stones and gravel.

Sexual dimorphism in this group is generally subtle. Ripe females may be noticeably fuller-bodied in the abdominal region; some Sinogastromyzon species show minor differences in pectoral-fin breadth or tubercle development on the snout of males during breeding season, but reliable sex determination is difficult outside of the spawning period. Without captive specimens in sufficient numbers, definitive statements about sexing in this species are not possible.

Breeding

Sinogastromyzon lixianjiangensis has no documented record of captive breeding. It is presumed to spawn in the manner typical of the genus and family: an egg-scatterer depositing small adhesive eggs among gravel and rock interstices in fast, well-oxygenated flow, with no parental care thereafter. The eggs and larvae develop in the current; adults take no further role.

A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been brought to spawn in mature, strongly-flowing aquaria with excellent water quality, and it is plausible that Sinogastromyzon could do so under similarly demanding conditions. However, for this species specifically, no such reports exist. Given that S. lixianjiangensis is not established in the trade and is known only from a restricted wild population, the honest picture is that this fish is not bred in the aquarium. Any keeper who does succeed in spawning it under river-tank conditions would be documenting something genuinely new.

In the aquarium

Sinogastromyzon lixianjiangensis is not an established aquarium fish and is unlikely to appear in the trade: its narrow endemic range, absence of a common name, and lack of commercial collection or captive propagation mean that it remains essentially unknown to the hobby. Any individual appearing in aquaria would be a wild-caught specimen of uncertain provenance.

For any Sinogastromyzon in a tank, the requirements are demanding and non-negotiable. High, uninterrupted water flow — produced by a powerful powerhead or spray-bar aimed along the tank — is essential, not optional. Water must be cool (61–72 °F), highly oxygenated, and extremely clean; elevated nitrate and stale, still water will kill these fish in short order. The tank should be mature — algae and biofilm must have colonised smooth rock and glass surfaces before the fish is introduced, or it will starve. A diet of biofilm supplemented with blanched greens and small invertebrates mirrors the natural feeding mode. Medication sensitivity (especially to copper-based treatments) is high due to the near-scaleless skin; any treatment should be used at reduced doses or avoided in favour of hospital-tank management. This is not a beginner fish and not suitable for a warm, standard community aquarium.

Conservation

Sinogastromyzon lixianjiangensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category. Its status here is recorded as Not Evaluated. The species is known only from the Lixianjiang River drainage in Yunnan Province, China — a single tributary system of the upper Mekong. This restricted range makes it inherently sensitive to any localised threat: water extraction, damming, agricultural run-off, or sedimentation in the Lixianjiang watershed would directly affect the only known population.

The upper Mekong and its Yunnan tributaries support a high diversity of narrowly endemic hillstream fishes, many of which are poorly documented and have received no IUCN assessment. Development pressures in Yunnan — including hydropower infrastructure on the main Lancang stem and its tributaries — represent real risks to stream habitats throughout the system, though the specific impact on the Lixianjiang drainage is not documented in the available literature. Given its narrow range and apparent absence from the aquarium trade, this species has no commercial collection pressure, and conservation value rests entirely on the integrity of its native stream habitat.
