Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa zaidamensis was described by the Russian ichthyologist Karl Kessler in 1876, hence the parentheses around his name marking a change of genus since the original description. It sits within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family of true loaches with roughly 790 described species spread across Eurasian streams. Within the sprawling genus Triplophysa it belongs to the subgenus Qinghaichthys, a cluster of species endemic to high-altitude drainages of northwestern China.
As with many Nemacheilidae, the older Cobitoidea literature used a tangle of now-superseded generic names — Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus among them — for fish now placed in Triplophysa, Schistura, Barbatula and their relatives. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, and this species remains in Triplophysa; no revision here changes that placement.
Morphology
Triplophysa zaidamensis has the classic stone-loach build: an elongated, cylindrical, benthic body, a flattened underside suited to hugging the streambed, and an adipose dorsal fin ridge rather than a true adipose fin. The skin is essentially scaleless, a trait shared across the family and one that matters directly for aquarium medication sensitivity in any Nemacheilidae kept in captivity. Three pairs of barbels around the mouth help it feel out food on the substrate in turbid or fast-moving water.
Documented sexual dimorphism in the wider Triplophysa plateau group includes nuptial tubercles that develop on breeding males, a feature reported from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau populations generally. Habitat
This species is endemic to the Qaidam (also romanized Zaidam) Basin, a hyperarid intermontane basin in Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province, in northern China — the basin that gives the species its epithet, and the fish's type locality. The Qaidam Basin sits high on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and its streams are cold, rocky and fast-flowing, feeding a closed, desert-fringed drainage system rather than draining to the sea.
As a demersal freshwater fish of a temperate, high-altitude basin, it is adapted to genuinely cold water rather than the warm, still conditions many aquarium loaches tolerate. It is one of many narrowly-endemic Triplophysa species across the plateau's isolated basins, most of which are known from very limited stream reaches and correspondingly little surveyed.
Feeding
Available trophic data places Triplophysa zaidamensis at a trophic level of roughly 3.1, consistent with a benthic micro-predator or omnivore that forages over the streambed for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other invertebrate prey typical of cold, fast, rocky Nemacheilidae habitat. As with all scaleless Nemacheilidae, any specimen in captivity would need careful handling around medication, since the near-absence of scales makes stone loaches broadly sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses meant for scaled fish. Given the complete absence of trade or husbandry data for this species, no specific tank parameters can be responsibly offered beyond that general caution.

Triplophysa zaidamensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status.
