Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa anshuiensis was formally described in 2018 by Wu, Wei, Lan, Du and colleagues, published in the journal ZooKeys as part of the ongoing documentation of China's remarkable subterranean fish diversity. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, within family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with the genus Triplophysa alone comprising roughly 160 valid species, the great majority of them restricted to the karst uplands of southwest China.
The species epithet anshuiensis follows the common convention for these narrow-range cave fishes, referencing the locality where it was collected. As with many recently described Triplophysa, it belongs to a fast-growing cluster of troglobitic (obligate cave-dwelling) species within the genus, discovered as ichthyologists have systematically surveyed karst cave systems across Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi and Chongqing over the past two decades. Given how recently it was named and how little follow-up work has been published, most biological detail beyond the original description remains undocumented in accessible literature.
Morphology
Like other cave-restricted members of its genus, Triplophysa anshuiensis shows the classic troglomorphic suite: loss of eyes (or eyes reduced to non-functional vestiges) and loss of body pigmentation, leaving the fish pale or translucent rather than patterned. These are convergent adaptations seen repeatedly across the many independent cave lineages within Triplophysa, evolved in response to the total absence of light in karst groundwater systems.
As a nemacheilid, it shares the family's general body plan — an elongate, cylindrical to slightly compressed body suited to holding position against current, a ventrally flattened head and underslung mouth for feeding at the substrate, and small barbels around the mouth used to feel out food in the dark. Many stone and brook loaches carry an erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin, both typical of the wider Cobitoidea; specific measurements of size, fin ray counts and other diagnostic details for this species are not confirmed in the sources available and are not repeated here rather than guessed at.
Habitat
This species is known from karst cave systems in the Xijiang River drainage of southern China, part of the broader Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) basin. It lives in subterranean streams and pools within limestone caves — permanently dark, groundwater-fed habitats that stay cool and are typically clear and well-oxygenated where flow is maintained, though conditions vary considerably between individual cave systems.
This is a strictly freshwater, obligate cave (troglobitic) species, not a surface-stream fish. It belongs to a wider community of karst-endemic Triplophysa found only in isolated cave drainages across Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi and Chongqing — each cave system effectively an island, which is why so many of these species are known from a single locality or a small cluster of nearby caves.
Feeding
No dietary studies specific to Triplophysa anshuiensis are available in the sources consulted, so nothing specific can be stated with confidence. Cave-adapted nemacheilids in general are presumed to feed opportunistically on whatever organic material and small invertebrates occur in these nutrient-poor, lightless systems — detritus washed in from the surface, small aquatic invertebrates, and possibly biofilm — relying on non-visual senses (barbels, lateral line, chemoreception) rather than sight to locate food, given the loss of eyes.
Because this fish is not present in the aquarium trade, there is no husbandry-derived feeding data to draw on either. Any statement more specific than the above would be speculation rather than sourced fact.

Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), the family's known breeders are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care — but no observation of spawning behaviour in this species exists to confirm that pattern applies here specifically. As a rare, recently described cave endemic with no aquarium presence, it should simply be treated as unbred and its reproductive biology as unknown.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa anshuiensis is not part of the aquarium trade and no keeper-facing husbandry information exists for it. It was not found listed on hobbyist reference sites, and its status as a narrow-range, likely legally protected cave endemic makes wild collection for the trade both unlikely and inappropriate. General cautions that apply across Nemacheilidae — sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications in scaleless or near-scaleless loaches, and a need for cool, clean, well-oxygenated water — are worth bearing in mind for the genus as a whole, but nothing here should be read as a care recommendation for this specific, un-kept species.
Conservation
Triplophysa anshuiensis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Narrow-range karst cave endemics in this genus are, as a group, inherently vulnerable: each species is typically confined to one cave system or a small cluster of them, so groundwater pollution, quarrying, tourism development of caves, and changes to local hydrology can affect an entire species' range at once. Without a formal assessment, no specific threat level can be assigned to this species, but the general vulnerability of single-cave-system Triplophysa is well documented across the genus, and it is reasonable to treat this as a fish worth conservation attention even in the absence of a Red List category.
