Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa bashanensis was formally described by Xu and Wang in 2009. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the most species-rich family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with many of its members restricted to the mountain streams of the Himalaya, the Tibetan Plateau and adjoining China. No older genus combination (such as Nemachilus or Noemacheilus) turns up for this species, suggesting it has always been described within Triplophysa, unlike many of its relatives that were reshuffled out of those broader, now-obsolete genera.
The species epithet bashanensis points to its type locality, tying the name directly to the place it was collected: a tributary of the Jialingjiang River in Shaanxi Province, China. As with much of this genus, the taxonomy rests on a single original description rather than a body of follow-up literature, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the reference point for the valid name.
Morphology
Triplophysa bashanensis is a small loach, recorded to a maximum of about 4 in standard length. Beyond the type description, published morphological detail is sparse, but the species shares the general nemacheilid body plan: an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a small mouth set for picking food from the substrate, and — as in other stone loaches — an erectile suborbital spine used defensively, along with the near-scaleless, delicate skin typical of the family.
Because detailed morphometric data beyond the original description have not surfaced, specific counts (fin rays, barbel number, colour pattern) are not confirmed here; this is a genuinely data-sparse species, and it is better to say so than to guess at features not documented in the available sources.
Habitat
The species is known from a tributary of the Jialingjiang River in Shaanxi Province, in subtropical central China, where it lives in freshwater, demersal habitat — meaning it stays close to the streambed rather than swimming in open water. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group favour clear, fast, well-oxygenated stream water running over gravel and stone, and there is no indication this species differs from that pattern.
No additional distribution records beyond the type locality have been found; the available evidence points to a narrow-range stream endemic rather than a widely distributed species, which is the norm for many Triplophysa in this part of China.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Triplophysa bashanensis have not been documented in the sources available. Based on the ecology of stone and brook loaches generally, it is reasonable to expect a benthic micro-predator diet of small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — picked from gravel and stone in fast-flowing water, but this has not been confirmed for this species specifically and should be read as inference from its family, not a verified fact.

Triplophysa bashanensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and has no meaningful trade history; it does not appear to be kept or offered as an ornamental fish. Any care approach would have to be extrapolated from the genus: stone loaches generally need cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water over a gravel or stone substrate, and — like other loaches — are near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments. Given the near-total absence of husbandry data, this species is best regarded as a scientific curiosity rather than a fish to source for a tank.
