Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa brevibarba was described by R. H. Ding in 1993, in the Chinese-language journal Acta Zootaxonomica Sinica (18(2):247-251), as one of two new Triplophysa species named from western Sichuan that year. The genus Triplophysa itself is the largest in the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches — with more than 150 recognized species and new ones still being described from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and its margins, so a species like this one sits in a genus that is still actively being sorted out taxonomically.
Nemacheilidae was itself carved out of the old, much broader "Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus" grouping as loach taxonomy was revised through the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and Triplophysa is one of several genera — alongside Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus and Schistura — that absorbed species once lumped under those older names. The Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid combination Triplophysa brevibarba; no synonymy or reassignment is noted in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa brevibarba has the typical stone-loach build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a small ventral or subterminal mouth fringed with barbels for probing the substrate, and — as the species name brevibarba ("short barbel") suggests — barbels that are notably short compared to related species, which was presumably a distinguishing feature in Ding's original description. Habitat
Triplophysa brevibarba is endemic to the upper Ya-lung (Yalong) River system in Sichuan Province, China, with records extending through the wider Jinsha River basin from Yushu in Qinghai down to Yibin in Sichuan. This places it squarely in the eastern Qinghai-Tibet plateau, a region of cold, fast, clear headwater streams running over cobble and gravel at high elevation — exactly the kind of habitat that has produced the plateau's huge diversity of Triplophysa species.
Plateau Triplophysa in general are cold-water specialists, with related species documented living at 41–59 °F in rapid mountain streams at elevations of roughly 3,000-4,1640 ft, in clear, heavily oxygenated water. This is not a warm-water or still-water fish: it belongs to fast, cool, richly oxygenated flowing habitat, and any attempt to keep or model it should respect that rather than default to tropical, sluggish conditions.
Feeding
Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are bold benthic micro-predators, working the bottom of fast streams for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey picked from between and under stones. Triplophysa brevibarba almost certainly follows this pattern, given its habitat and its close relatives, though no species-specific dietary study is available in the sources consulted here.

What can be said, by extension from its habitat and its plateau Triplophysa relatives, is that any fish from this lineage would need cold, fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated water over a coarse cobble/gravel substrate — the opposite of a warm, still community tank — and that as a small, near-scaleless nemacheilid it would likely share the group's general sensitivity to poor water quality and heavy-handed medication. This remains inference from the genus, not documented care advice for the species itself.
Conservation
Triplophysa brevibarba is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Near Threatened, reflecting its restricted distribution as an endemic of the upper Ya-lung River drainage on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet plateau.
