Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the Russian ichthyologist Solomon Herzenstein in 1888, originally placed in the genus Nemachilus as Nemachilus chondrostoma. Like the great majority of Central Asian and Tibetan Plateau stone loaches once dumped into that broad, now-defunct genus, it was later moved into Triplophysa, the genus that today holds the bulk of the region's nemacheilid diversity. The Catalog of Fishes recognizes the current combination as Triplophysa chondrostoma.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family of loaches, and one built almost entirely from small, plain-bodied fish adapted to fast, clear, cool streams rather than the boldly patterned botiids and hillstream loaches more familiar to hobbyists. Triplophysa itself is a large, still actively-revised genus centered on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding basins.
Morphology
Triplophysa chondrostoma is a small loach, reported at around 3 in standard length — modest even by nemacheilid standards. As in other stone loaches, expect an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened underside suited to holding position on the streambed, and reduced or embedded scales giving it a functionally naked, scaleless skin. Detailed morphological description beyond the type material is sparse in the literature available for this species, so specifics of coloration and fin structure are not confidently documented here.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Qaidam Basin, an arid, high-altitude endorheic basin in Qinghai Province on the Tibetan Plateau, where it shares its range with other Qaidam-endemic Triplophysa such as T. zaidamensis and T. altipinnis. The basin's streams are cold, high-elevation waters draining a semi-arid to arid landscape — a very different environment from the warm lowland rivers most aquarium loaches come from.
As a Qaidam Basin Triplophysa, it is a cold-water stream fish, and the genus as a whole is characteristic of fast, clear, oxygen-rich Tibetan Plateau waters. Specific data on this species' preferred flow, substrate and depth were not found in the available sources; treat any aquarium-style habitat description beyond "cold, high-altitude, flowing water" as unconfirmed.
Feeding

Anyone encountering this species would be dealing with a genuine collector's or research fish, not an established aquarium animal, and should treat every husbandry parameter as provisional pending real data.
