Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa choprai was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1934. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by species count the largest family of loaches, and one that has been extensively reshuffled as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were broken apart over the twentieth century. Triplophysa is the genus that absorbed most of the cold, high-altitude Himalayan and Central Asian stone loaches from that split, and it remains one of the largest and most actively revised genera in freshwater ichthyology, with new species still being described from the region.
The species name honours Dr. Bashambhar Nath Chopra (1898-1966), an Indian zoologist. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination, and this article follows it in keeping the species in Triplophysa; older literature referencing Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus choprai refers to the same fish under a superseded genus.
Morphology
Like other Triplophysa, T. choprai is a slender, elongate, rounded-bodied loach adapted for holding position on the bottom of fast water rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum length of about 5.5 in total length, a modest size typical of the genus. As a nemacheilid it lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra loaches and kin); stone and brook loaches instead rely on a flattened, streamlined profile and small paired fins to stay pinned against current.
The skin, as in virtually all loaches, is effectively naked — scales are minute and deeply embedded rather than forming an armoured covering — which makes the group broadly sensitive to poor water quality and to full-strength medications. Habitat
This is a coldwater Himalayan species. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, subtropical species, consistent with a fish living in cool, well-aerated running water at elevation rather than warm, still or blackwater conditions. The species has no presence in the aquarium trade, so there is no ornamental collection pressure to weigh against it; its conservation picture is governed by the broader condition of Indus-drainage coldwater streams in the Hindu Kush foothills, which regional surveys flag as facing pressure even where individual species like this one remain Least Concern.
