Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the Kyrgyz-Soviet ichthyologist F.A. Turdakov in 1954 as Nemachilus conipterus, part of the broad, now-dismantled genus Nemachilus (also spelled Noemacheilus in older literature) that once absorbed most of Eurasia's stone loaches. As that genus was progressively split apart through the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, the species was moved into Triplophysa, the large genus of Central Asian and Tibetan Plateau stone loaches, and is listed by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes as Triplophysa coniptera (Turdakov, 1954) — the parentheses signalling the change of genus since the original description.
It remains in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest and least-known loach family, with hundreds of narrow-range species scattered across mountain drainages from the Balkans to China. Older sources and regional checklists may still carry the name Nemachilus/Noemacheilus conipterus; the current, valid combination is Triplophysa coniptera.
Morphology
Triplophysa coniptera is a small, elongate stone loach built on the standard nemacheilid plan: a slender, roughly cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding station on stream-bed stones, and a small subterminal mouth surrounded by barbels for probing the substrate.
