Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa crassilabris was described by Ding in 1994 and placed in the genus Triplophysa within the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone and brook loaches — the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Older literature and some database entries still file Nemacheilidae under the broader historical label Balitoridae, a holdover from before the stone loaches and the hillstream loaches were split into separate families; the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names, treats Nemacheilidae as its own family and Triplophysa crassilabris as a valid, currently accepted combination.
Triplophysa is an enormous genus — by far the largest in Nemacheilidae — built mostly from small, superficially similar, mottled brown or grey stream fish that are told apart chiefly by fin-ray counts, barbel length and other fine anatomical detail rather than bold external color pattern. That makes species-level identification difficult without a specimen in hand, and it is part of why a great many Triplophysa, this one included, are documented almost entirely through their original description and subsequent checklist entries rather than through field or aquarium observation.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Triplophysa crassilabris — length, body proportions, fin-ray counts, barbel number — has not surfaced in available sources, so nothing specific can be stated here without guessing. What can be said is genus-level and applies broadly across Triplophysa: these are small, elongate, cylindrical-to-moderately-compressed loaches with a flattened head and belly suited to holding position on a stream bed, a mouth set low and ringed with barbels for probing the substrate, and — as in other true loaches — a small, erectile spine beneath the eye and tiny, often reduced or embedded scales that leave the skin close to naked.
That near-scaleless skin is a genus-wide trait worth flagging early, because it governs how the species must be handled and medicated if it is ever kept: stone loaches lack the scale armor of most aquarium fish and absorb whatever is in the water readily, for better or worse.
Habitat
Triplophysa crassilabris is known from China, and its genus is centered on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the cold mountain drainages of Central Asia. Published phylogeographic work on Triplophysa across this region describes the genus as a coldwater specialist, living in glacier-fed and other clear, high-altitude streams, generally favoring fine substrata, with population densities running highest near lake outflows and lowest in the coldest glacier-fed reaches; some species in the genus are cave-dwelling. Quaternary glaciation has left a strong imprint on the genus, producing deep genetic structure and high species endemism between isolated plateau drainages — a pattern consistent with a genus, and quite possibly a species, defined by a single river system rather than a broad range.
No stream-specific locality, elevation or flow data has been published for this species itself, so its habitat should be read as "typical of Triplophysa on the plateau and in Chinese mountain streams" — cold, clear, oxygen-rich, flowing water — rather than as a directly observed account.
Feeding
No diet data specific to Triplophysa crassilabris has been published. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are benthic micro-predators, working the stream bed for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — picked from between stones and fine gravel in fast, clear water; this is the working assumption for the species' natural diet.
In the absence of any aquarium-keeping record for this fish, nothing can be said about feeding behavior in captivity. Any keeper attempting it should default to what works for cold-stream nemacheilids generally: small sinking live and frozen foods offered on the bottom, since dedicated micro-predators of this kind often ignore floating flake entirely.

Triplophysa crassilabris does not appear to be established in the aquarium hobby — there is no trade name, no care-sheet record, and no size data to size a tank against. It should not be assumed to be available or suitable for a typical community setup. Any prospective keeper of Triplophysa in general needs to start from the genus's coldwater, high-oxygen, fast-flow requirements — most plateau and mountain-stream Triplophysa are unsuited to a standard heated tropical tank and instead need cool, well-oxygenated, current-rich water more like a coldwater or hillstream setup.
As with other true loaches, the near-scaleless skin means caution with copper-based and full-strength medications is warranted if the species is ever kept and falls ill; half-doses and gentle treatments are the safer default across Nemacheilidae. Given how little is documented, anyone encountering this species in the trade should treat it as an unknown quantity and research the specific collection locality's water conditions rather than relying on generic loach care advice.
Conservation
Triplophysa crassilabris has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. FishBase notes it has low inherent vulnerability to fishing pressure, but that metric is not a conservation assessment and should not be read as one.
Many Triplophysa are narrow-range endemics restricted to a single stream system or plateau drainage, a pattern the genus's phylogeography strongly supports, and species in that position are typically data-deficient or unassessed simply because no one has yet done the fieldwork — not because they are known to be secure. Without a formal assessment or distribution study, no specific threat, population trend or trade pressure can honestly be attributed to this species.
