Triplophysa cuneicephala is a small stone loach known only from the Haihe River basin around Beijing in northern China — a genuine local endemic in a genus whose hundreds of species are otherwise spread across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Central Asia. Its slender body and distinctive wedge-shaped head are built for gripping the bottom of cool, fast, clear streams, where it forages unseen among rocks and pebbles. It has never been formally assessed for conservation status, and like most members of this vast, obscure family it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and unbred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa cuneicephala belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family of loaches by species count, and one still being actively revised as ichthyologists work through the genus-level tangle left behind by the old, broad Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus. The genus Triplophysa itself is enormous, with well over a hundred described species spread from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau across Central Asia, and this species sits within it as a narrowly distributed member restricted to a single river basin in northern China.

The species epithet cuneicephala is descriptive, combining Latin cuneus ("wedge") with -cephala ("headed") to name the fish's wedge-shaped head — a feature visible in the field and a useful identification point against the many superficially similar Triplophysa sharing the region. As with much of this genus, the Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination; no synonymy or recent generic reassignment is noted here, so the name is kept as Triplophysa cuneicephala.

Morphology

This is a slender, elongate stone loach with the wedge-shaped head that gives it its name — a profile that tapers toward a somewhat flattened, pointed snout, well suited to nosing into gaps between rocks and pebbles on the streambed. Coloration is a camouflaging brown to olive-green ground shade broken up with darker mottling and spots, blending the fish into a bed of stream gravel and stones when it is at rest.

Like other nemacheilids it is a benthic, bottom-hugging fish with reduced or embedded scales rather than a heavily scaled body, leaving it — as with most true loaches — sensitive to harsh treatments and slow to recover from skin damage. Detailed anatomical data such maximum length are not well documented for this specific species; related Triplophysa in the region are typically small, in the range of a few centimetres to around 4 in, and this species should be assumed to sit toward the smaller end of that range unless better data emerges.

Habitat

Triplophysa cuneicephala is endemic to the Haihe River basin in the vicinity of Beijing, northern China — a narrow native range that makes it, by definition, a single-region specialist rather than a widespread species. It lives in clear, fast-flowing, rocky streams, the classic nemacheilid habitat: cool water running over a stony or pebbly bed with good oxygenation and little sediment.

As with its wider genus, this is a cold-to-cool-water fish rather than a tropical one — Triplophysa as a group is strongly associated with the cool streams and rivers of the Tibetan Plateau and adjoining uplands, and northern China's Haihe basin experiences a comparable cool-water regime. The habitat sits under real pressure: the streams around Beijing lie close to one of the most heavily urbanized and industrialized regions in China, and habitat degradation from pollution and development is a plausible ongoing threat to a range-restricted fish like this one, even though it has not been formally quantified.

Feeding

Stone loaches in this genus are bottom-foraging micro-predators and grazers, working over rocks and gravel for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items, picking at the biofilm and detritus that accumulate on stream substrate. Triplophysa cuneicephala should be assumed to follow this pattern closely, given how consistent the feeding style is across the genus.

In practical terms this means a diet of small live and sinking foods rather than flake: a fish adapted to hunting small invertebrates off cool rocky streambeds is unlikely to compete well for food that floats or drifts, and is much better served by sinking pellets, small frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia) and any naturally occurring biofilm and micro-fauna in a maintained tank.

Mating

No specific courtship or spawning behavior has been documented for Triplophysa cuneicephala in the sources available. Sexual dimorphism is not established for this species either, and should not be assumed present without evidence — many small stone loaches show little obvious external difference between males and females outside of breeding condition.

What can be said with confidence is genus-typical: Triplophysa species that have been observed spawning do so as egg-scatterers in flowing water, without any pairing ritual approaching the complexity of cave-spawning or mouthbrooding fishes. Data for this particular species is sparse, and it would be dishonest to describe a mating sequence beyond what the wider family is known to do.

Stone and brook loaches of this genus reproduce as egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care of eggs or fry — a strategy built around a specific stream environment, not a tank.

This is a genuinely data-sparse species: it is a narrow-range endemic with essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby, so there is no body of hobbyist observation to draw on. The honest summary is that breeding is rarely or never attempted in captivity for this species, consistent with the broader pattern across Nemacheilidae, where only a small handful of well-known genera and species have ever been reliably spawned by aquarists.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa cuneicephala is not an established aquarium fish — it does not appear to be traded or kept with any regularity, and this profile should be read as a description of a wild species rather than a proven-in-the-hobby care guide. Anyone who does encounter it should treat it as a cool-water stream specialist: strong water flow, high dissolved oxygen, a stony or gravel substrate, and clear, well-filtered water are the baseline requirements suggested by its native habitat, alongside cooler temperatures than most tropical community fish are kept at.

As with other true loaches, the reduced scale covering of nemacheilids means caution is warranted with medications and copper-based treatments, and any newly acquired wild-collected stone loach should be watched closely for the parasitic and bacterial issues that scaleless and near-scaleless fish are prone to. Given how little is documented about this species specifically, a keeper taking one on should expect to be working from genus-level inference rather than established, species-specific care data.

Conservation

Triplophysa cuneicephala has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status — an accurate reflection of how little attention this narrow endemic has received rather than any indication that it is secure. Its restriction to the Haihe River basin around Beijing is itself a conservation concern: single-basin endemics are inherently vulnerable to any localized habitat change, and the Beijing region is under substantial pressure from urban development, pollution and water use.

There is no evidence that this species is targeted by the aquarium trade — its range and obscurity make wild collection for the hobby unlikely to be a meaningful factor. The more relevant risks are the same ones facing many small stream fishes near major population centers in China: habitat degradation, water extraction and pollution, none of which have yet been formally assessed for this species but which are consistent with the general threats reported for its region.
