Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa daqiaoensis was described by the Chinese ichthyologist R.H. Ding in 1993, in a paper covering two new species of the genus Triplophysa from western Sichuan. The species epithet points to its type locality — the Daqiao area of the upper Anning River system in Mianning County, Sichuan Province — a common naming convention in this genus, where many species are known only from the single stream or river reach where they were first collected.
It sits in the genus Triplophysa, within the family Nemacheilidae (the stone and brook loaches), the largest of the loach families and the dominant loach lineage across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Central Asian inland waters. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination Triplophysa daqiaoensis, and GBIF's taxonomic backbone confirms Ding, 1993 as the describing authority. As with much of this genus, there has been no reason to revise the combination since description — Triplophysa is itself the modern replacement for older names like Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus that used to cover this diversity.
Morphology
FishBase records Triplophysa daqiaoensis as a small, elongate nemacheilid, reaching about 5.5 in total length in males and slightly less, around 5.5 in, in females — modest for the genus but on the larger side for a stone loach. The fin-ray counts on record are sparse but typical of the family: seven branched dorsal soft rays and five anal soft rays, consistent with the slender, subcylindrical body plan shared across Triplophysa.
As in other Nemacheilidae, the skin is essentially scaleless or covered only in minute, deeply embedded scales, and detailed description of colour pattern, fin shape and the presence of a suborbital spine is not available from the sources at hand — genus-level accounts note that Triplophysa, unlike the botiid loaches, generally lacks an erectile suborbital spine, relying instead on a low, streamlined body built for holding position in current.
