Triplophysa edsinica was described in 2003 and placed in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest of the loach families and one that has been heavily reshuffled by taxonomists over the past few decades as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were broken apart into Triplophysa, Schistura, Barbatula and others. Some authorities have treated this species under the segregate genus or subgenus name Tarimichthys, as Tarimichthys edsinicus; the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for which combination is currently valid, and this article keeps the widely used name Triplophysa edsinica.
The species epithet refers to its home water, the Edsin (also transliterated Ejin or Ruo Shui) River of Inner Mongolia, China — a straightforward locality-based name of the kind common across this large and still incompletely surveyed genus.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa edsinica shares the family's basic build: a small, elongate, cylindrical to slightly compressed body suited to holding position on the stream bed, a flattened head and underslung mouth ringed with barbels for sensing food on the substrate, and reduced or embedded scales that leave the skin close to naked — a trait that matters for how sensitive these fish are to medication.
