Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa erythraea was formally described in 2019 by Zhao and colleagues, part of a wave of newly recognised cave-adapted members of the genus Triplophysa discovered across the karst landscapes of southern China over the past two decades. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by species count the largest family of loaches — and specifically to Triplophysa, a genus centred on the Tibetan Plateau and the karst hill country of southern and central China that has repeatedly and independently produced blind, depigmented cave lineages as surface populations colonised subterranean water.
The species epithet erythraea comes from the Greek erythros, "red," a direct reference to the fish's blood-red appearance in life — the colour of its circulatory system showing through skin and flesh with no scales or pigment cells to mask it. As with many recently described Chinese cave loaches, the taxonomy here is young and the genus Triplophysa remains under active revision; the Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination, which is retained here.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach typical of the nemacheilid body plan, with adults measured in the type series running roughly 2.5–3.5 in standard length (about 3–4.5 in total length). Its most immediately obvious features are the product of life without light: the eyes are entirely absent, and the body lacks the scales and pigmentation seen in surface-dwelling Triplophysa, leaving translucent skin through which the blood vessels are visible — the source of the fish's overall red coloration and its common name.
Like other members of the family it carries the sensory barbels typical of a benthic, bottom-feeling loach, which take on added importance for a fish that cannot see. No sexual dimorphism was reported in the type description; males and females appear externally alike. As a near-scaleless, unpigmented cave specialist, it should be treated as extremely sensitive to light, handling and water-quality stress relative to its surface-dwelling relatives, though this has not been formally studied.
Habitat
Triplophysa erythraea is known only from Dalong Cave in Huayuan County, Hunan Province, in central southern China — a single karst cave system, making this one of the narrowest-range loach species yet described. The water at the type locality was recorded at 13.5 degrees Celsius and pH 6.0, describing a cool, still-to-slow-moving, mineral-rich underground stream typical of karst cave hydrology in this part of China.
This is a strictly subterranean, coldwater species with no known surface population — a true troglobite, an obligate cave dweller that cannot survive outside its dark, cool, stable cave environment. Nothing in the available record suggests it tolerates the warmer, faster, sunlit conditions of the surface streams that most stone and brook loaches inhabit; its entire known existence has taken place in total darkness.
Feeding
The type description characterises Triplophysa erythraea as a demersal carnivore, foraging along the cave-stream bottom for whatever small invertebrate prey the cave ecosystem supports. Cave food webs are typically food-poor compared to surface streams, sustained by organic matter washed in from outside (bat guano, leaf litter, drifting detritus) rather than by photosynthesis, so cave loaches in general are adapted to a sparser, more opportunistic diet than their surface relatives.
Beyond this general carnivorous, bottom-foraging habit, detailed dietary data for the species is not available — a genuinely data-sparse point that should be stated honestly rather than guessed at. Given its blindness, prey detection almost certainly relies on the barbels and lateral line rather than sight.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism was noted in the original description, and nothing has been published on courtship, spawning behaviour, or reproductive biology for this species. As an extremely narrow-range cave endemic discovered only in 2019, its reproductive habits in the wild remain essentially unstudied.
By analogy with other stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), which typically pair or aggregate loosely to scatter eggs over gravel or cobble in flowing water with no parental care, a broadly similar pattern might be expected here — but this has not been observed or confirmed for Triplophysa erythraea, and the species' unusual troglobitic lifestyle means its breeding cues (in the total absence of light and season) could differ meaningfully from surface relatives. Data is sparse; nothing more specific should be claimed.
Breeding
There is no record of Triplophysa erythraea being kept or bred in the aquarium hobby, and as an extreme cave specialist known from a single wild locality, it is not established in the trade. Following the pattern of the wider stone and brook loach group, the presumed mode — where reproduction has been observed in relatives — is egg-scattering over gravel or stone in flowing water, with no parental care. Set against that backdrop, this species should be considered rarely or never bred in captivity, and any specific claim about its breeding behaviour would be guesswork rather than documented fact.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa erythraea is not a hobby aquarium fish. It is an extreme cave endemic collected from a single karst cave system in China, described only in 2019, with no established aquarium trade, no husbandry literature and no evidence of captive populations. It is included here for its scientific interest as one of the most specialised loaches known, not as a species available to keepers.
If a specimen were ever encountered in a research or conservation context, everything about its biology points to needs completely unlike a typical community stone loach: cool water around 13 to 14 degrees Celsius, total darkness, minimal disturbance, and the general extreme sensitivity to light, handling and water chemistry shown by obligate cave fish. As with all scaleless nemacheilids, any medication would need to be approached with great caution. None of this should be read as encouragement to collect or trade the species — its entire known population lives in one cave.
Conservation
Triplophysa erythraea has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2019, but the underlying vulnerability is real: the entire known population is restricted to a single cave system, Dalong Cave in Huayuan County, Hunan Province, which makes the species inherently and severely at risk from any single localised threat — groundwater pollution, hydrological disruption, cave tourism, or habitat disturbance.
Single-cave endemism is a recurring and serious conservation concern among China's recently described Triplophysa cave loaches generally: species with a global range of one cave system have essentially no buffer against a local disaster. No population trend, threat assessment or protective status is documented for this species in the available sources; a formal IUCN assessment and dedicated field survey would be needed to say more.
