Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa eugeniae was described by the Russian ichthyologist Alexander Prokofiev in 2002. It has always stood in the genus Triplophysa; there is no older "Nemachilus" or "Noemacheilus" combination on record for this species, unlike many of its relatives which were shuffled out of those defunct catch-all genera during the twentieth-century revision of Cobitoidea. The species is placed in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, and one that has absorbed a great deal of taxonomic churn as older genera like Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split into narrower, better-defined groups such as Triplophysa, Schistura and Barbatula.
Triplophysa itself is a large, still-growing genus of high-altitude Asian stream loaches, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) remains the reference point for its valid species and combinations. As with many Triplophysa described from isolated mountain drainages, T. eugeniae has attracted little follow-up study since its original description, and no synonymy or subsequent taxonomic revision affecting it is documented in the sources available here.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Triplophysa eugeniae specifically is sparse in the sources available to us — FishBase records the species but does not give a documented maximum length or a full description. What can be said comes from the genus: Triplophysa are elongate, cylindrical to only mildly compressed loaches, generally small, with reduced or embedded scales that leave the skin close to naked, a feature shared across Nemacheilidae and one with real consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated.
Like other nemacheilids, species in this genus typically carry a small, sometimes only weakly developed suborbital spine near the eye — far less prominent than the stout erectile spine of the true spined loaches (Cobitidae) or botiids, but part of the same functional toolkit. Barbels around the mouth aid in detecting food by touch and taste as the fish forages along the substrate. Beyond these genus-level generalities, we do not have a verified size or colour-pattern description for T. eugeniae itself, and we would rather say so than invent one.
Habitat
Triplophysa eugeniae is native to China, per FishBase, and inhabits freshwater, subtropical habitat as a demersal, bottom-dwelling fish. The genus Triplophysa as a whole is centred on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and adjacent high-altitude drainages of Central and East Asia, where its species occupy cold, clear, fast-flowing mountain streams and rivers across an extraordinary elevational range, from roughly 200 to over 5,000 metres, with water temperatures typically in the region of 41–59 °F.
The specific stream system, elevation and microhabitat of T. eugeniae are not detailed in the sources available to us, but its placement within Triplophysa and its subtropical Chinese distribution are consistent with the genus's broader pattern: a benthic loach of running, well-oxygenated, mineral-rich water over stone, gravel or sand, rather than a still or heavily vegetated habitat.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of about 3.1 for Triplophysa eugeniae, consistent with an omnivore leaning toward small animal prey — the typical nemacheilid pattern of picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other benthic fauna from among stones and gravel in fast water, supplemented opportunistically with detritus and algae.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, but going by the genus, a benthic micro-predator of this kind would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia readily, and sinking foods generally, while showing little interest in flake left to float at the surface.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Triplophysa eugeniae in the sources available to us, and the species does not appear to have a record of captive breeding. Across the genus and the wider family Nemacheilidae, stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers rather than pair-forming or nest-building fish: there is no elaborate courtship display on record, and sexing most species reliably by external features is difficult without a side-by-side comparison of ripe fish.

This is honestly typical of the genus: Triplophysa species from isolated high-altitude drainages are rarely if ever kept or spawned by hobbyists, and published breeding accounts even for better-known congeners are scarce. In the aquarium
Triplophysa eugeniae has no established presence in the aquarium trade, no common name, and no husbandry track record that we can point to. It is not a species to source or stock on the strength of this article; there simply isn't the data to responsibly recommend tank size, tankmates or long-term care.
What can be extrapolated cautiously from the genus is that Triplophysa from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and similar high-altitude systems are cold-water specialists that need clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than the warm, still conditions suited to many tropical aquarium fish — the opposite husbandry profile from a warm blackwater species. As with nemacheilids generally, the reduced scalation typical of the family means added caution with copper-based and full-strength medications would be prudent if the species were ever kept, though this is a genus-level inference, not a documented fact about T. eugeniae itself.
Conservation
Triplophysa eugeniae has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List — we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a status. No dedicated conservation assessment or documented population trend is available in the sources consulted here.
