Triplophysa flavicorpus is a small stone loach known only from the Hongshui River system in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China, with records extending into the neighbouring Xijiang River basin. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the true home of the "stone" or "brook" loaches — slender, bottom-hugging micro-predators of cool, clear, fast-flowing water. This species is distinctive even among its barred relatives, with six or seven broad dark bars crossing a yellowish body, a single stripe running the length of the lateral line, and a deeply forked tail carrying a bold black spot at its base. It has been recorded from karst caves and subterranean streams, and like most single-river Triplophysa it is genuinely data-sparse: it has never been assessed by the IUCN and is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa flavicorpus was described in 2004 by Yang, Chen & Lan. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, by far the largest genus of stone loaches, within the family Nemacheilidae — a family that was itself only split out from the old, broad Balitoridae/Nemacheilinae grouping in recent decades as Cobitoidea taxonomy was reworked. Many species now placed in Triplophysa were formerly filed under Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus in older literature; this species, however, was described directly into Triplophysa and has no earlier combination to note.

The genus is enormous and still growing, with many species — including this one — known from a single river system or even a single cave. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name Triplophysa flavicorpus; no synonymy or revision affecting this species has been flagged in the sources consulted here.

Morphology

This is a small, elongate stone loach with the slender, faintly compressed body typical of Nemacheilidae. FishBase lists a maximum standard length of about 4 in, placing it among the more modestly sized members of the genus. The dorsal fin carries around 10 branched rays and the anal fin 6–7 branched rays, consistent with the family's general fin-ray pattern.

The species is named for its body colour — flavicorpus, "yellow body" — and the pattern on that yellowish ground is its most identifiable feature: six to seven broad, dark vertical bars cross the flank, with a single dark stripe running along the lateral line. The deeply forked caudal fin is marked with a large black spot at its base, and each caudal lobe carries two further black bars. The upper lip is interrupted at the middle, a detail used in identification within the genus. Like other true loaches it is expected to carry the erectile suborbital spine typical of Cobitoidea and the fine, deeply embedded scales that leave scaleless-skinned loaches sensitive to medication, though the cache does not describe these features for this species specifically.

Habitat

Triplophysa flavicorpus is endemic to the Hongshui River, with additional records from the wider Xijiang River basin, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. Notably, it has been found in karst caves and subterranean streams — a habitat shared by a number of Guangxi's cave-adapted fish fauna, where limestone geology riddles the landscape with underground watercourses.

Detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species was not found in the cache, so exact figures should not be assumed. Related Triplophysa species from similar Chinese mountain and karst drainages are documented to favour cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water — related species such as T. jianchuanensis have been recorded from spring water around 58 °F, and T. stolickai is described as preferring roughly 61–68 °F. Triplophysa as a genus is strongly associated with cool water across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Central Asia, and it would be a mistake to assume this species lives in warm, still water without direct evidence.

Feeding

No diet-specific data for Triplophysa flavicorpus was found in the cache. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are bottom-dwelling micro-predators, working the substrate of fast, clear streams for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — rather than grazing algae or biofilm. Given the karst cave and subterranean-stream habitat records for this species, its diet is likely to lean on whatever invertebrate life is available in those cool, food-limited environments, but this is inference from the genus rather than a documented fact.

Any aquarium approach should follow the same logic: offer small sinking live or frozen foods (bloodworm, small crustaceans, chopped invertebrates) rather than assuming a fish that will readily take flake from the surface.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Triplophysa flavicorpus in the sources consulted. Within the genus, sexual dimorphism is known: Triplophysa species can show nuptial tubercles on breeding males, a pattern shared with many stone and brook loaches. Whether this species expresses visible tubercles or other breeding dimorphism has not been recorded, so nothing further can be said without guessing.

Breeding

As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa flavicorpus is not known to have been bred in the aquarium. Stone and brook loaches in general are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward — there is no cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour in this family, and nothing in the record suggests this species is an exception. Given that it is known only from a remote river system and cave habitat in Guangxi and is essentially absent from the hobby, captive spawning data simply does not exist. The honest summary is that this species is rarely, if ever, kept, let alone bred — any breeding notes here would be extrapolated from the genus rather than observed.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa flavicorpus is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear to be traded, and no husbandry record was found in the cache. Any care approach would need to be extrapolated cautiously from its relatives and its native karst-stream and cave habitat: cool water, strong flow, high oxygenation, and a substrate of stone and gravel rather than soft sand or dense planting. As with most Triplophysa, it should not be assumed to tolerate warm, still, tropical-community conditions — a cave-and-cool-stream species like this is far more likely to need cooler, well-oxygenated water than a typical heated community tank provides.

General Nemacheilidae caution applies even without direct data on this species: true loaches are typically near-scaleless and can be sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications, so any future keeper should treat gently and dose cautiously. Given the total absence of hobby or captive-care information, this is a species to leave undisturbed in its native cave and river system rather than one to seek out for a tank.

Conservation

Triplophysa flavicorpus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. This is unsurprising: it is a narrow-range endemic, known only from the Hongshui River and adjoining Xijiang basin in Guangxi, China, including cave and subterranean-stream habitat — exactly the profile of species most likely to be overlooked by global assessment while also being most vulnerable to local pressures such as water extraction, pollution and habitat alteration in karst systems. Absent a formal assessment, no status can be honestly assigned beyond Not Evaluated, and no trade pressure has been documented for this species — it does not appear to be part of the aquarium trade.
