Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa gracilis was described by the British ichthyologist Francis Day in 1877, originally as Nemacheilus gracilis. Like a great many Himalayan and Central Asian stone loaches, it has passed through several generic homes as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were progressively split apart; the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — now places it in Triplophysa, the genus that holds the bulk of the high-altitude Eurasian stone loaches. Nemachilus deterrai Hora, 1936, described from Man Lagoon in Kashmir/Ladakh, is recognised as a junior synonym of this species, an indication of how much regional taxonomic splitting and lumping this group has been through.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest loach family and taxonomically one of the most actively revised — genera such as Triplophysa, Schistura and Barbatula are frequently reshuffled as new material and molecular work come in. Morphology

Feeding
