Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa griffithii was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1868. Like many stone loaches from Central and South Asia, it has passed through more than one generic combination over the years — older literature and database records list it under the historical names Nemachilus griffithii and Noemacheilus griffithii, reflecting a period when a great many Asian loaches were lumped into a broad Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus catch-all. Subsequent revision of the family placed it in Triplophysa, the genus that now holds the large majority of Central and East Asian stone loaches, and the Catalog of Fishes governs that placement as the currently valid combination.
