Triplophysa guizhouensis is a small stone loach described only in 2018 from a single subterranean stream in Guizhou Province, southern China. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that fills the cool, fast, clear streams of Eurasia with quietly hunting bottom-dwellers, and its own genus, Triplophysa, is the dominant loach lineage of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and surrounding karst country. Unlike many of its high-altitude relatives, this species retains functional eyes and lives underground rather than at altitude — a cave-dwelling stream fish known so far from a single locality, and one that has never been assessed for conservation status or kept in the aquarium hobby. What is known about it comes from its original scientific description; the rest is honestly unknown.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa guizhouensis was formally described in 2018 by Wu, He, Yang and Du in the Journal of Fish Biology, based on specimens collected from a small subterranean river at Baijin Village, Huishui County, Guizhou Province, China. The type locality sits within the Mengjiang River and Hongshui River basin, part of the wider Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) system of southern China. The species epithet guizhouensis simply names the province of discovery.

It is placed in the genus Triplophysa, within the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Triplophysa is a large and still actively researched genus centred on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the karst landscapes of southern and western China, and new cave- and spring-dwelling species continue to be described from the region. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid name; nothing in the description or subsequent literature suggests a synonymy or reclassification, so the combination Triplophysa guizhouensis stands as described.

Morphology

The original description notes several diagnostic features: functional, well-developed eyes (many Triplophysa from deep cave systems lose their eyes entirely, but this species retains them), 14 branched caudal-fin rays, 8 to 10 inner gill rakers on the first arch, a well-developed posterior air bladder, and scales present on the body behind the dorsal fin. Like other members of the genus it is an elongate, cylindrical loach with a flattened head and ventral mouth suited to close bottom contact, small barbels around the mouth for tactile foraging, and the smooth, largely scaleless-feeling skin typical of Nemacheilidae.

No maximum length was reported in the type description's abstract, and no subsequent literature has added a verified adult size. Given the size range of related Triplophysa stone loaches — most run from roughly 2–4.5 in as adults — a similar modest size is plausible, but this is inference from the genus rather than a documented measurement for the species itself, and it should be treated as data-sparse rather than confirmed.

Habitat

Triplophysa guizhouensis is known only from its type locality: a small subterranean (cave) river at Baijin Village in Huishui County, Guizhou Province, in the karst uplands of southern China. The site lies within the Mengjiang–Hongshui drainage of the Pearl River basin. Karst cave streams of this kind are typically cool, clear, well-oxygenated and low in visible light, running over rock and gravel substrates with little or no aquatic vegetation.

The retention of functional eyes suggests the species is not confined to total darkness the way some deep-cave, blind Triplophysa are, and it may occupy twilight zones or connect to surface-adjacent stream reaches — but this is an inference from morphology rather than a documented behavioural account. No further habitat data, population surveys, or range extensions beyond the type locality have been reported, so it should be treated as a narrow-range, likely single-locality endemic until further study says otherwise.

Feeding

No diet study exists for Triplophysa guizhouensis specifically. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a family are bottom-oriented micro-predators, working the substrate of cool, clear, flowing water for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic prey — using barbels and a ventral, suction-like mouth to feel and pick food from stone and gravel surfaces. A cave-dwelling population most likely feeds opportunistically on whatever invertebrate life and organic material washes into or lives within the subterranean stream, but this is inference from the family's general biology, not a confirmed observation for this species.

Without aquarium history or field diet data, nothing further can honestly be said about its feeding preferences.

Mating

No information on courtship, sexual dimorphism, or spawning behaviour has been published for Triplophysa guizhouensis. The type description is a taxonomic diagnosis based on preserved specimens and does not report reproductive biology or field observations of breeding activity. As with many recently described, single-locality cave and stream loaches, this aspect of its life history is simply unknown.

Breeding

There is no record of Triplophysa guizhouensis being bred, or even kept, in the aquarium hobby — it does not appear to have entered the ornamental trade at all. Stone and brook loaches of the family Nemacheilidae are, as a group, egg-scatterers: ripe fish release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. Where genus relatives have been observed, this scattering pattern is the norm, and captive spawnings of Triplophysa species are rare and generally undocumented in detail.

Given the complete absence of husbandry or captive-breeding data for this species, the honest statement is that its breeding biology is unknown and it is not bred in captivity.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa guizhouensis is not established in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry data — temperature range, water chemistry, tankmates, feeding response — has been published for it. It should not be assumed available or suitable for aquarium keeping based on this profile.

What can be said, by extension from its genus and family, is cautionary rather than practical: Triplophysa as a genus is centred on cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water, and many species (particularly Tibetan Plateau forms) are true cold-water fish that do poorly in warm, still community tanks. Like other nemacheilids it likely has minimal scale cover and would be expected to share the family's general sensitivity to poor water quality and heavy medication, though this has not been tested for this species specifically. Until real husbandry accounts exist, this is a species to know about rather than one to plan a tank around.

Conservation

Triplophysa guizhouensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated. It is known from a single type locality — a small subterranean river in Huishui County, Guizhou — and no population surveys, range extent, or trend data have been published since its 2018 description.

Subterranean and karst-restricted fishes in southern China are, as a group, vulnerable to disruption of groundwater and cave hydrology from quarrying, water extraction, and pollution of karst aquifers, since a single-locality species has nowhere to retreat to if its one known stream is degraded. No specific threats have been documented for this species, and nothing here should be read as an assessment beyond what is stated: it is unassessed, and its narrow known range is itself a reason for caution rather than an indicator of decline.
