Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa hexiensis was described by Zhao and Wang in 1988, originally as a subspecies, Temachilus dorsonotatus hexiensis. Temachilus was itself a synonym in use for what is now treated as Triplophysa, the huge nemacheilid genus of stone loaches spread across the Tibetan Plateau, Central Asia and southern China. Older literature and databases may still list the fish under the combination Nemachilus hexiensis or as a subspecies of dorsonotatus; the Catalog of Fishes, the authority followed here, recognises the current combination Triplophysa hexiensis as a full species.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one whose taxonomy has been repeatedly revised as researchers split the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus into narrower groups including Triplophysa, Schistura and Barbatula. The species epithet hexiensis is a toponym, following the common nemacheilid convention of naming a fish for the locality where it was collected.
