Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa heyangensis was described by Zhu in 1992. It belongs to the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with hundreds of described species spread across mountain and lowland streams of Asia and the Middle East. Triplophysa is itself an enormous genus, concentrated on and around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding drainages, and many of its species, like this one, are known only from a single river system.
The species epithet heyangensis points to a place-name origin, following the common loach-taxonomy convention of naming a species after its type locality. As with much of Nemacheilidae, older literature sometimes used the broader, now largely abandoned genus Nemacheilus (or Noemacheilus) for fish now placed in Triplophysa; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, and this species is correctly listed under Triplophysa.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa heyangensis has the family's characteristic build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a flattened underside suited to holding position on stream substrate, and small eyes set high on the head. Nemacheilid loaches lack the erectile suborbital spine found in the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, skunk and their relatives) — that spine is a botiid feature, not a Triplophysa one. The skin is largely scaleless or very finely scaled, a trait shared broadly across the loach group that makes these fish sensitive to medications and copper in particular.
