Triplophysa intermedia was described by the Russian naturalist Karl Fyodorovich Kessler in 1876. The genus Triplophysa sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was itself only widely recognised as separate from the broader Cobitidae in recent decades; older literature and some database records still carry species like this one under the earlier genus names Nemachilus or Noemacheilus, reflecting a long history of shuffling within this group.
Nemacheilidae is by far the largest loach family, with roughly 790 described species, the great majority of them small, cryptically coloured stream fish across Eurasia. Triplophysa itself is a huge genus within that family, centred on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the inland waters of Central Asia, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the current valid combination, Triplophysa intermedia.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa intermedia shares the family's general build: an elongate, cylindrical body tapering toward the tail, a flattened underside suited to gripping the substrate in current, and a small, ventrally positioned mouth surrounded by barbels used to feel out food on the bottom. Like many stone loaches it likely carries an erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless or reduced-scale skin, traits typical of the wider loach group and one reason keepers must handle these fish gently and medicate them with care.
Specific measurements and colour pattern for this species are not documented in the sources consulted here. Related Triplophysa species in the same size class typically run in the range of 4–6 in, and it is reasonable to expect T. intermedia falls within that general envelope, though this should be treated as an inference from its relatives rather than a confirmed figure for the species itself.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Hulun Lake system in Inner Mongolia, China — a large, cold, inland lake in the far north of the country, fed by rivers draining the surrounding steppe. This fits the broader pattern for Triplophysa, a genus centred on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Central Asian inland drainages, where its members occupy cold, clear, well-oxygenated running water and cold lake margins rather than warm lowland rivers.
This is a coldwater fish of a high-latitude, high-altitude drainage system, not a tropical species. In the wild it experiences seasonal cold and swift, oxygen-rich flow typical of the region's rivers and lake margins, conditions very different from the warm, still or slow-flowing waters that suit many tropical aquarium loaches.
Feeding
Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are bottom-foraging micro-predators, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — off the substrate of fast, clear streams and lake margins. No species-specific dietary study is available for Triplophysa intermedia, but this general pattern, shared across the genus and family, is the best-grounded expectation for how it feeds in the wild.
In captivity, related Triplophysa species are reported to take a range of foods including sinking pellets, flakes and live foods, generally showing more interest in sinking, meaty items than at floating flake. Any fish of this genus should be offered a diet weighted toward small live, frozen or sinking prepared foods that reach the bottom, rather than relying on foods designed for mid-water fish.

Anyone encountering this fish in a collection should not expect it to spawn, and any claim of home breeding for this specific species would need solid documentation before being taken at face value.

Triplophysa intermedia is not an established aquarium fish; it is not known to be part of the ornamental trade, and this profile should be read as a biological sketch rather than a stocking guide. Should a specimen ever be kept, the genus's well-documented coldwater, high-oxygen, fast-flow requirements should govern the setup: cool water rather than a tropical heater, strong filtration and current, and a substrate of sand or fine gravel that lets a bottom-dwelling loach forage naturally.
As with other members of Nemacheilidae, near-scaleless skin should be assumed until shown otherwise, meaning caution with copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally. Given the complete absence of trade or husbandry data for this species, prospective keepers are better served by the well-documented coldwater Triplophysa and Barbatula species already established in the hobby than by attempting to source and keep this one.
Conservation
Triplophysa intermedia is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. Both FishBase and the assessment describe it as a lake-dwelling stone loach tied to the Hulun Lake system of Inner Mongolia, a large inland water body rather than a single small stream, which likely supports its non-threatened status by giving it more range and habitat than the many single-stream Nemacheilidae endemics that fill this family.
No evidence of aquarium-trade pressure on this species was found — it does not appear to be collected or traded — so any conservation concern for it would come from broader pressures on the Hulun Lake system itself, such as water use, pollution or hydrological change in its Inner Mongolian catchment, rather than from the ornamental fish trade.
