Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa kaznakowi was described by the Russian ichthyologist Alexander Prokofiev in 2004, as part of a broader revision that untangled the Triplophysa labiata species complex into several distinct species. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and the one that holds the bulk of Triplophysa's several hundred described species across the mountains and plateaus of Asia.
The species epithet honours the Russian zoologist and explorer Alexander Nikolaevich Kaznakov (1872–1933), who collected and studied the fauna of Central Asia. As with much of Triplophysa, older regional literature may have referred to related fish under the obsolete genera Nemachilus or Noemacheilus, but T. kaznakowi itself was described directly in Triplophysa and has not needed reassignment; the Catalog of Fishes and GBIF both confirm Triplophysa kaznakowi Prokofiev, 2004 as the valid combination.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum length of 5 in standard length, making this a modestly sized member of a genus that ranges from a few centimetres to considerably larger. Beyond that measurement, published morphological detail specific to this species is sparse; the original 2004 description (part of the labiata-complex revision) is the primary source, and it has not been widely popularised since.
As in other Nemacheilidae, the body plan can be assumed to follow the family pattern shared across the genus: an elongate, cylindrical body suited to holding position in current, a ventrally flattened head and mouth adapted for foraging on the streambed, and the near-scaleless or fine-scaled skin typical of stone loaches. Whether T. kaznakowi carries the small erectile suborbital spine found in some nemacheilid genera is not confirmed in the available sources, so it is not asserted here.
Habitat
The species is known from the Tuguryuk River valley (recorded in some sources as the Nom-Gol River) in China. FishBase classifies it as a temperate freshwater, benthopelagic fish — consistent with the cool, flowing headwater and mid-elevation streams that most Triplophysa occupy across the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalaya and the mountain drainages of Central and East Asia.
