Triplophysa kullmanni was described in 1975 by Petru Bănărescu, Theodor Nalbant and Ernst Ladiges, part of a wave of Nemacheilidae descriptions from Afghanistan and the wider Central and South Asian highlands during the 1960s and 70s. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, the dominant stone-loach genus of the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalaya and Central Asia, and one of the most species-rich genera in the whole family — a group that absorbed many species once placed in the older, now largely obsolete genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus as the group was progressively revised.
The species belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, which was itself only split out from the broader Balitoridae/Cobitidae complex in relatively recent taxonomic history. As with much of this genus, Triplophysa kullmanni has not been the subject of a full modern revision, and detailed comparative work distinguishing it from its many congeners is not readily available; the name is nonetheless the currently accepted combination and is treated as valid here.
