Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa lacusnigri was described by the Russian ichthyologist Leo Berg in 1928, hence the parenthetical authority. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was split out of the old broad Balitoridae/Noemacheilidae grouping and now stands as the largest family of loaches, with many of its Central Asian and Himalayan species — like this one — placed in the genus Triplophysa. Older literature and some regional checklists may still use the earlier combinations Noemacheilus lacusnigri or Nemacheilus lacusnigri; the Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and it is retained here as Triplophysa lacusnigri.
The species epithet lacusnigri is Latin for 'of the black lake' — lacus (lake) and nigri (black, genitive) — a direct reference to its type locality, Lake Karakul (Kara-Kul), whose name is itself Turkic for 'black lake'. A 2023 paper in the Journal of Ichthyology documented a wider distribution for the species across Tajikistan's inland waters than previously recognized, describing it as a 'little-known' loach even within the taxonomic literature.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa lacusnigri has the typical stone-loach build: an elongated, cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to gripping the substrate in fast current, and a small, ventrally positioned mouth surrounded by barbels for probing the streambed. Triplophysa lacusnigri is known from the Lake Karakul basin in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of the Pamir, Tajikistan, and — per more recent survey work — from a wider set of inland waters across Tajikistan, including the Lake Bulunkul basin. This is genuinely extreme habitat by aquarium-fish standards: the Pamir plateau sits at roughly 3,2953 ft elevation, and its waters are cold, clear, high-altitude streams and lake margins, far removed from the warm lowland rivers that most tropical loaches inhabit.
As with many Nemacheilidae, this is a species of cool-to-cold, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water rather than warm, still water.
