Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa lacustris was described by Yang and Chu in 1990. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone loach family — by far the largest loach family, with roughly 790 described species, most of them small benthic fishes of Eurasian streams and lakes. The genus Triplophysa is itself enormous and taxonomically active, radiating across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and neighbouring Yunnan into hundreds of species, many of them narrow-range endemics restricted to a single spring, cave system or lake.
Older literature on this genus group often used the broader, now-obsolete names Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus for plateau stone loaches; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current combination, and Triplophysa lacustris is treated here under that valid genus. Species-level relationships within Triplophysa on the plateau continue to be revised as new surveys turn up additional undescribed populations, including cave-dwelling (hypogean) relatives in the same region.
Morphology
Like other Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa lacustris is a small, elongate, benthic fish with a flattened head and underslung mouth suited to a life spent against the bottom. Barbels around the mouth let it probe gravel and sediment for prey by touch. FishBase lists a maximum size of only 2 in standard length, making this a genuinely small stone loach even by the standards of the family.
As in its relatives, an erectile spine sits in a groove below the eye — a defensive feature shared across the loach superfamily — and the skin carries the reduced, embedded scalation typical of Nemacheilidae, leaving these fish sensitive to harsh medication. Beyond these family-level traits, detailed morphological description specific to this species is sparse in the available sources; much of what is documented comes from survey and conservation-assessment literature rather than a dedicated taxonomic redescription.
Habitat
This species is endemic to Lake Xinyun in Yunnan, China — its entire known range is this one lake, which is what drives its Critically Endangered status. FishBase classifies it as a temperate freshwater, benthopelagic fish, living near the bottom but capable of moving up into the water column.
The wider genus Triplophysa is a hallmark of cold, fast, high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau streams, where research on congeners has recorded typical temperatures around 41–59 °F and some populations doing best around 43–45 °F — genuinely cold water by aquarium standards. Yunnan sits at the southeastern edge of that plateau ecosystem, and while a lake habitat is calmer than the rapids many plateau Triplophysa favour, the genus as a whole is built for cool, clear, oxygen-rich water rather than warm still conditions. Given the single-lake endemism and lack of species-specific temperature data in the cache, precise numbers for T. lacustris should be treated as inferred from the genus rather than measured for this population.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level around 3.1 for this species, consistent with the rest of Nemacheilidae — a micro-predator taking small aquatic invertebrates rather than grazing algae or biofilm. Stone loaches in this family typically forage over gravel and sediment for insect larvae and small crustaceans, locating prey with their barbels.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species, since it is not established in the hobby. Based on the family pattern, any captive individual would be expected to need small live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, small crustaceans, similar sinking fare — rather than flake, and might be reluctant to compete for food at the surface given its bottom-oriented, crepuscular-to-nocturnal foraging style typical of small nemacheilids.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning behaviour for Triplophysa lacustris is documented in the available sources. Nemacheilidae as a family are egg-scatterers with no parental care, and there is nothing in the cache to suggest this species departs from that pattern. Given its status as a single-lake endemic known primarily from conservation survey work, its reproductive behaviour in the wild has likely not been closely studied, and nothing about pairing or sex differences can be stated here without guessing.
Breeding

Triplophysa lacustris is not a hobby fish. It does not appear to be traded, and the sources available describe it purely as a subject of ichthyological survey and IUCN assessment rather than fishkeeping. Nothing here should be read as a stocking recommendation.
What can be said, extrapolated cautiously from the genus, is that any Triplophysa from this plateau lineage would need cool water and high oxygen levels rather than a warm community tank, plus the same care that applies across nearly scaleless Nemacheilidae — gentleness with medication, since these fish lack the scale coverage of most aquarium species and absorb treatments readily. Given the species is Critically Endangered and endemic to a single lake, there is also a strong conservation argument against any collection for the trade.
Conservation
Triplophysa lacustris is assessed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered, with the assessment dated November 2022, under criterion B1ab(iii) — reflecting an extremely small range (a single lake) and ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat. Because its entire known population is confined to Lake Xinyun in Yunnan, any degradation of that one water body — pollution, shoreline development, introduced species, or water-level change — threatens the whole species at once.
This pattern is common across the Triplophysa radiation on and around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where many species are narrow-range endemics of a single spring, cave or lake system, several still undescribed. There is no indication of an aquarium trade in this species; the pressures documented are habitat-based, tied to the single lake it depends on, not collection for the hobby.
