Triplophysa laticeps is a small stone loach known only from the Yuanjiang (Upper Red River) basin of Yunnan, China, where it was described by Zhou and Cui in 1997. Like the great majority of the roughly 200 species in this Central and East Asian genus, it is a modest, elongate bottom-dweller of clear, swift, gravel-bottomed streams — a fish built for holding position in current rather than for showy colour. It reaches only about 2 in and, beyond its type description, is essentially undocumented: no aquarium literature, no breeding accounts, no conservation assessment. It stands in for a huge, quietly unglamorous slice of the loach world that has never been meaningfully studied outside the original species description.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa laticeps was described by Zhou and Cui in 1997, one of a wave of new Triplophysa species named from Yunnan's river systems through the 1990s and 2000s as ichthyologists worked through the region's stone-loach diversity. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that has been extensively reshuffled — many species once placed in the broad genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed among Triplophysa, Schistura, Barbatula and other genera as the group has been revised.

Triplophysa itself is a large genus, its species spread from the Tibetan Plateau and the mountains of Central Asia east through Yunnan and Sichuan into the Red River drainage. T. laticeps sits among a cluster of narrow-range Triplophysa described from single river systems in southern China, and the Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the name; no synonymy or reclassification affecting this species is documented in the available sources.

Morphology

Triplophysa laticeps is a small, slender loach reaching a maximum standard length of about 2 in — among the smaller members of a genus that runs from tiny stream fish to much larger, deep-bodied high-altitude species.
