Triplophysa macrophthalma is a small, cold-water stone loach endemic to China, described by Zhu and Guo in 1985 and named for its notably large eyes — macrophthalma means "large-eyed" in Greek. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family, whose members are the bold little benthic micro-predators of clear, fast, oxygen-rich streams across Eurasia. Like most of the roughly 150 species in the genus Triplophysa, it is known mainly from taxonomic and distributional records rather than from any detailed aquarium or life-history study, and much of its biology — exact size, temperature tolerance, and breeding behaviour — remains genuinely data-sparse. What is well established is its habitat type: gravelly, cold, fast-flowing water typical of the high-altitude and temperate streams this genus favours across Central Asia, Tibet and China.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa macrophthalma was described by Zhu and Guo in 1985. It was originally placed, as many stone loaches were, in the older catch-all family classification Balitoridae; the Catalog of Fishes and current taxonomy now place it in Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family that was split out from Balitoridae as the group's true relationships became clearer through the 1990s and 2000s. This kind of reshuffling is common across Cobitoidea — old Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus records have been redistributed among Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera — but T. macrophthalma has remained in Triplophysa since its description, and that is the valid combination used here.

The genus name Triplophysa combines the Greek triplos ("threefold") and physa ("bladder" or "swim bladder"), a reference to the distinctive sensory canal structures used to distinguish the genus. The species epithet macrophthalma comes from Greek makros ("large") and ophthalmos ("eye") — "large-eyed," presumably describing a proportionally large eye relative to close relatives or congeners. It carries Czech and Mandarin Chinese vernacular names (Mřenice velkooká; 大眼高原鰍/大眼高原鳅) but no established English trade name, reflecting its near-total absence from the aquarium hobby.

Morphology

As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa macrophthalma shares the family's basic stone-loach body plan: an elongate, cylindrical to slightly compressed body built for holding position on the bottom of moving water, a subterminal mouth suited to picking at the substrate, and small barbels around the mouth for sensing food in murky or fast-flowing conditions. Like other members of its genus and family it likely carries an erectile suborbital spine and the near-scaleless, delicate skin typical of true loaches — a combination that makes stone loaches sensitive to water quality and medication even though specific data for this species has not been documented in available sources.
