Taxonomy & naming
The species was first described by the Russian naturalist Karl Kessler in 1879, and like many Central Asian stone loaches it has bounced between genera as the family Nemacheilidae has been repeatedly revised. It has at various times been placed in Diplophysa, Barbatula and Labiatophysa before settling in its current combination, Triplophysa microphthalma; FishBase places it within the subgenus Labiatophysa. This kind of generic churn is normal for the group — Nemacheilidae is the largest loach family and one of the most taxonomically unstable, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for which combination is currently valid.
The species epithet microphthalma comes from the Greek micro- (small) and ophthalmos (eye), describing the reduced eye size that is one of its most distinctive features. It belongs to genus Triplophysa, a large assemblage of small benthic loaches centred on the Tibetan Plateau and the cold streams of Central and East Asia.
Morphology
Triplophysa microphthalma is a small loach, reaching only about 2.5 in in standard length. Its most notable features are its small eyes and its comparatively long pectoral and ventral fins — adaptations consistent with a life spent pressed against the substrate in fast-flowing water rather than relying on vision in open water. Like other nemacheilids it has a low-slung, underslung mouth positioned for picking food off the streambed, and barbels around the mouth that likely help it locate prey by touch and taste in turbid or fast water.
As with most true loaches in this family, the skin carries only small, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless — a trait that matters for disease sensitivity even though this species is not established in the hobby. No suborbital spine is recorded for this genus in the way it is for the botiids; Triplophysa relies on its small size, cryptic habits and current-hugging body shape rather than defensive spines.
Habitat
This species is endemic to a small corner of eastern Xinjiang, China, recorded from localities around Hami City, Turpan City and Toksun County — an arid, high-elevation region where fish life is restricted to isolated cold-water streams and the irrigation ditches fed by mountain snowmelt. It lives in fast-flowing water over gravelly bottoms, the classic stone-loach setting: clear, cool, well-oxygenated current rather than still or warm water.
Because the surrounding landscape is desert basin rather than continuous river network, populations of this kind of Triplophysa are often isolated in a handful of streams, which is part of why so little has been published on the species since its original description — there has been comparatively little follow-up fieldwork in these remote drainages.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for this species have not been published, but its anatomy points clearly to the same benthic micro-predator lifestyle typical of the genus: picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey from among the gravel of fast streams, using its barbels to locate food by touch in the current. As with related Triplophysa, it almost certainly ignores food suspended in open water in favour of items that reach the bottom.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species given its absence from the trade, but by analogy with its close relatives it would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm or daphnia readily, and to be reluctant to compete for floating flake.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Triplophysa microphthalma. Data on reproduction in this species is sparse to the point of being effectively absent from the literature available; what is known comes almost entirely from its original 1879 description and later molecular and distributional notes, none of which touch on breeding biology.
By analogy with better-studied stone and brook loaches, spawning would be expected to follow the seasonal rhythm of its cold-water habitat, likely tied to snowmelt-driven changes in flow and temperature, but this should be read as inference from the genus rather than as anything confirmed for this species.
Breeding
There is no record of this species being bred in captivity, and given its complete absence from the aquarium trade, none should be expected. Stone and brook loaches of this kind are, where anything is known at all, egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel in fast water with no parental care — but for Triplophysa microphthalma specifically the data are simply too sparse to say more.
The honest picture is that this is a data-deficient, effectively unstudied species outside its original taxonomic description: it has never been kept or bred in the hobby, and any breeding account would be speculation rather than fact.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa microphthalma is not established in the aquarium trade and there is no hobbyist literature describing its care. If it were ever kept, its biology argues strongly for a cool-water, high-flow setup rather than a typical tropical community tank: this is a fish from cold streams and irrigation channels in an arid, high-elevation region of China, and treating it as a warm-water species would misread its habitat entirely.
As with other small nemacheilids, a fine, soft substrate to protect its barbels, strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen and a gravel or stone bottom that lets it forage naturally would be the starting point for any responsible attempt at care. Given the total absence of trade or husbandry data, this species should be regarded as one for institutional or specialist cold-water collections, not a fish to seek out for a home aquarium.
Conservation
Triplophysa microphthalma has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status. Its known range is narrow and fragmented — a cluster of localities in an arid basin of eastern Xinjiang — which is the kind of range profile that often correlates with vulnerability, but without a formal assessment this remains an inference rather than a documented finding.
The species faces no known pressure from the aquarium trade, since it does not appear to be collected or traded. Any conservation concern would instead stem from the same threats that affect other narrow-range stream endemics in arid Central Asian basins: water extraction for irrigation and agriculture in a region where surface water is already scarce. No dedicated conservation assessment of this species has been published.
