Triplophysa microphysa was described by the Chinese ichthyologist P.W. Fang in 1935. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by species count the largest of the loach families, and the one whose genera (Triplophysa, Schistura, Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus and others) have been repeatedly reshuffled as regional faunas were revised. Many species once placed in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been moved into Triplophysa, which the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — now treats as the correct combination for this species.
Biological data on T. microphysa itself is limited; FishBase's own account draws mainly on a 1995 Chinese freshwater fish synopsis and length-weight parameters rather than a dedicated study. That sparseness is typical of the genus: Triplophysa numbers in the hundreds of described species, many known from a single river system or a handful of collections, and this species appears to be one of them.
Morphology
As a nemacheilid, Triplophysa microphysa has the classic stone-loach build: an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on the streambed, and small paired fins used to brace against current rather than to swim in open water.
