Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa microps was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1866. It belongs to the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest and most species-rich family of true loaches, with the bulk of its diversity concentrated across the Himalaya, the Tibetan plateau and the river systems draining them. Nemacheilidae itself was only widely recognised as separate from the older, broader "Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus" grouping in recent decades, and many of its genera, including Triplophysa, have been repeatedly revised as that reshuffling continues; the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid combination, which keeps this species in Triplophysa.
The genus name Triplophysa comes from the Greek for "three tube," a reference to tube-like structures around the dorsal and anal region used in classifying the genus. The species epithet microps is Greek for "small-eyed" or "small-looking," describing the characteristically small eyes that distinguish this species from closer-eyed relatives. The common name "Leh triplophysa loach" ties the fish to the Leh region of Ladakh in the western Himalaya, though the precise type locality is not confirmed in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Triplophysa microps is a small, slender, elongated loach with a brownish-grey ground colour and a pale underside, in keeping with the plain, cryptic patterning typical of stone loaches that rely on blending into rocky streambeds rather than bold colour. It carries two pairs of barbels around the mouth, used to feel and taste the substrate while foraging, and its most distinguishing feature — reflected directly in its scientific name — is a pair of notably small eyes. That thin, largely naked skin is a consistent trait across the family and matters for anyone considering how such fish would need to be kept and medicated, even though specific husbandry notes for this species are not available.
Habitat
This species is known from South and Central Asia, with records spanning Pakistan, India and China. Sources place it across a remarkable spread of major river systems — the Indus, the Yellow (Huang He), the Yangtze, the Salween, the Mekong and the Brahmaputra — as well as alpine lakes on the Tibetan plateau, indicating a benthopelagic freshwater fish of high-altitude headwaters and cold mountain streams rather than lowland tropical rivers.
Habitat given this distribution is fast-flowing, rocky, well-oxygenated stream water at elevation, consistent with the broader ecology of Triplophysa, a genus centred on the cold streams and alpine lakes of the Tibetan plateau and the mountain ranges surrounding it. This is a cold-water to cool-water fish by geography, not a warm tropical species, though exact temperature and pH data for this particular species were not found in the sources consulted.
Feeding
No species-specific diet study was located for Triplophysa microps. Based on the well-documented foraging ecology of Nemacheilidae generally, it is reasonable to describe it as a benthic micro-predator: a fish that works over rocks and gravel picking off small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans rather than grazing algae or biofilm.

No aquarium breeding records for this species were found. That fits the honest pattern across stone and brook loaches as a whole: outside of a small number of well-studied temperate genera, most Nemacheilidae — including the great majority of Triplophysa — are rarely or never bred in the home aquarium, and this species appears to be no exception.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa microps has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby. No dedicated care guide was found on the major hobbyist reference sites consulted, and it does not appear to be traded. What follows is therefore inferred cautiously from its biology and from the broader husbandry pattern of cool-water Nemacheilidae, not from direct keeping reports.
Given its high-altitude, fast-flowing native waters, a fish of this kind would be expected to need cool-to-cold, clear, well-oxygenated, well-flowing water over a rocky or gravel substrate rather than a warm, still community tank — the opposite setup from many popular tropical loaches. Like other largely scaleless nemacheilids it should be assumed sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications until shown otherwise. In the near-total absence of published husbandry data, the honest position is that this is a data-sparse species best left to specialists or left undisturbed in the wild rather than treated as a general aquarium recommendation.
Conservation
Triplophysa microps is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, an assessment dated 28 October 2009. FishBase notes the species is not commercially exploited and carries a low vulnerability-to-fishing score, consistent with a Least Concern rating for a wide-ranging, non-target species.
Its range spans multiple major river systems across Pakistan, India and China, including remote high-altitude reaches of the Tibetan plateau, which likely limits direct human pressure on most populations. No recent reassessment or updated conservation concern was found in the sources consulted, and there is no indication that this species is drawn into the aquarium trade at any scale.
