Triplophysa nandanensis is a small, little-known stone loach described in 1995 from a single county in the hills of Guangxi, southern China. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest of the loach families and the one that gives the group its "stone" or "brook" loach name — slim, near-scaleless bottom-dwellers built for clear, fast, well-oxygenated streams rather than the still, planted tanks most aquarists imagine when they hear the word loach. Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa nandanensis was described in 1995 by Lan, Yang & Chen. The original description used the current binomial, and no historical synonym for the species has surfaced in the available record — unlike many of its relatives, it was never shuffled through the old, now-obsolete Nemachilus/Noemacheilus catch-all genera before landing in Triplophysa.

The genus Triplophysa itself is one of several segregates carved out of that old catch-all as Nemacheilidae taxonomy was revised through the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and it is now the largest genus in the family, concentrated across the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalaya and the hill-stream systems of southern and central China. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is the governing authority for the valid name, and it lists T. nandanensis as a valid species in Triplophysa within family Nemacheilidae. The species epithet marks its type locality, Nandan County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Triplophysa nandanensis is a small, elongate, laterally slender loach built for life clinging to and foraging over stream substrate rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3 in, making it one of the smaller Triplophysa — a genuinely miniature stream loach rather than one of the larger, more robust species found elsewhere in the genus.
