Triplophysa nanpanjiangensis is a small stone loach known only from a handful of subterranean spring outlets near Zhanyi, in Yunnan Province, China — one of the countless little-known Triplophysa that fill the streams, springs and underground waters of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding karst country. It reaches barely 3.5 in and carries the mottled brown blotching typical of the genus, but almost nothing about its life in the wild has been studied beyond the bare facts of where it lives and how it is built. It is a textbook case of the family's central honesty problem: a real, described, Red-Listed fish that is genuinely data-sparse, and any account of it has to say so plainly rather than paper over the gaps.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa nanpanjiangensis was described by S. Q. Zhu and W. X. Cao in 1988, one of the many stone loaches named from China's karst and plateau drainages in the closing decades of the twentieth century as Chinese ichthyologists worked through the country's freshwater fauna. It belongs to Triplophysa, by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae — the true stone and brook loaches — and one that has absorbed a great many species originally placed in the older, now largely obsolete genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus as the group was revised.

The species epithet points to its geography: the Nanpan River (Nanpanjiang), a headwater tributary system of the Pearl River (Xijiang) drainage that rises on the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name, and it continues to list this species under Zhu & Cao's original combination, Triplophysa nanpanjiangensis, in the family Nemacheilidae.

Morphology

Like other Triplophysa, this is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach built for life on and under stream substrate rather than in open water. Fin-count data from a mitochondrial genome study of a Zhanyi County specimen record a dorsal fin with three unbranched and seven branched rays, an anal fin with three unbranched and five branched rays, nine pectoral rays, six ventral (pelvic) rays and sixteen caudal rays, along with normal, functional eyes and a slightly forked caudal fin. FishBase describes an arched mouth typical of a bottom-grazing and micro-predatory feeder, a complete lateral line running the length of the body, and a body pattern of irregular dark brown blotches and small spots scattered over a paler ground colour — the kind of disruptive mottling that works as camouflage against gravel and stone.

Maximum recorded size is modest: about 3.5 in standard length for males and unsexed specimens, putting it among the smaller Triplophysa. As in most stone loaches, the skin carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales rather than a normal scaled covering, leaving it functionally near-naked and, by extension, sensitive to anything that stresses skin and gill tissue.

Habitat

This species is known only from a very restricted area near Zhanyi (recorded historically as Zhanyixian County), Yunnan Province, in the upper Nanpanjiang (Pearl River) drainage of southwestern China — specifically from subterranean water outlets near Haijiashao and Laomuge. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of tropical underground waters, meaning it lives at least partly in karst spring or cave-outlet habitat rather than an open surface stream, a pattern shared with a number of other narrow-range Triplophysa described from Yunnan's limestone country.

No dedicated temperature or water-chemistry study of this species has been published in the available literature, and its precise thermal and chemical tolerances have not been documented. As a general rule Triplophysa species run cool, flowing, well-oxygenated, mineral-rich water typical of plateau springs, streams and karst outlets; readers should treat this species as presumptively cool-water rather than assume tropical-warm conditions, but the honest position — and the one this profile takes — is that specific figures for this species are not available and should not be invented.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.1 for Triplophysa nanpanjiangensis, consistent with an omnivorous, insectivorous micro-predator that forages over the substrate for small invertebrates rather than grazing purely on algae or biofilm. This fits the broader pattern for stone and brook loaches, which typically pick insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates from gravel, sand and rock surfaces in fast, clear water.

No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, since it is not established in the hobby. Based on the genus and its trophic position, an animal of this kind would be expected to take small live and frozen foods, along with sinking invertebrate-based diets, in preference to flake — but this is an inference from its relatives and trophic level, not a documented observation.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Triplophysa nanpanjiangensis. There is no reported sexual dimorphism, no known breeding season, and no record of how or when wild fish reproduce in their subterranean-outlet habitat. This is unsurprising for a species known from only a tiny, hard-to-access range and never kept or studied in captivity — the honest answer for its reproductive biology is that it has not been described.

Breeding

There are no aquarium breeding records for this species, and none should be expected given that it is not in the hobby. Based on what is known for Nemacheilidae generally, stone and brook loaches like this one are presumed to be egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward — the same pattern documented in better-studied Triplophysa and Schistura. That is an inference from the family, not a confirmed fact for this species, and it is stated here as such rather than as observed behaviour.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa nanpanjiangensis is not a hobby fish. It has an extremely restricted natural range — a small set of subterranean spring outlets in one part of Yunnan Province — and there is no record of it being collected, traded or kept in aquaria. This profile exists to document the species accurately, not to encourage its acquisition; a fish with this narrow a range and this fragile a conservation status has no business being pulled into the aquarium trade.

For context, stone loaches in this genus that are kept do best in cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a fine gravel or sand substrate, and — being near-scaleless like other loaches — are sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications. None of that is a care recommendation for this particular species, which should simply be left alone in the wild.

Conservation

Triplophysa nanpanjiangensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment dated January 2024, on the strength of its extremely limited endemic range — a handful of subterranean water outlets near Haijiashao and Laomuge in Zhanyi County, Yunnan. A species restricted to so small and specific a set of localities is inherently exposed to any single disturbance of that habitat, whether from groundwater extraction, pollution, quarrying in the surrounding karst, or changes to the hydrology that feeds the outlets.

There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure is not a documented threat; the risk profile here is about habitat integrity at a very small number of sites rather than exploitation. As with many other narrow-range Yunnan Triplophysa, its conservation depends on protecting the specific springs and outlets it is known from, about which very little has been published beyond the original description and a few molecular studies.
