Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa nasalis was described by the Russian naturalist Karl Fyodorovich Kessler in 1876, hence the parenthetical authority — a sign the species has since been moved from its original genus. Like most of its relatives it was originally placed in Nemachilus (also spelled Noemacheilus), the old catch-all genus for Eurasian stone loaches; that genus has since been extensively split, and the great majority of its Central and East Asian species, including this one, are now placed in Triplophysa following revisions tracked by the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names.
Triplophysa is the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae, with well over a hundred described species spread from the Tibetan Plateau and the mountains of Central Asia into China and neighbouring regions. It is a taxonomically active genus — new species continue to be described and old records reassessed — and T. nasalis sits within that sprawling, still-incompletely-resolved group of small stream loaches.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa nasalis has the classic stone-loach build: an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on a stream bed, and a small, low-set mouth with short barbels for probing the substrate. Available notes describe it as a small species, well under 4 in standard length, which is typical for the genus — most Triplophysa are compact fish scaled to life in narrow mountain streams rather than large rivers.
The skin is effectively naked, covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales, a trait shared across the true loaches and one with real consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated. Detailed morphological description for this particular species — fin ray counts, precise colouration, presence of a suborbital spine — is not available from the sources on hand, and rather than guess at specifics this profile keeps to what is documented: a small, slender, benthic stream loach of typical Triplophysa form.
Habitat
Triplophysa nasalis is native to Central Asia, where it inhabits cold, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams — the standard habitat for the genus, which is centred on high-altitude and mountain drainage systems rather than warm lowland rivers. Water in these streams runs cold, typically in the range of roughly 50–64 °F, over clean gravel and stone substrates with strong current.
This coldwater profile is the single most important fact about the species from a keeping standpoint: it is not a tropical fish, and it should never be treated as one. Precise river systems, watershed, and elevation are not detailed in the available sources, and the species should be assumed to occupy the kind of narrow, localised mountain-stream range typical of many of its Triplophysa relatives, several of which are known from only one or a few watercourses.

In an aquarium setting this diet translates to small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small chopped invertebrate foods — along with quality sinking pellets sized for a small-mouthed fish; it is unlikely to show much interest in flake left floating at the surface. What can be said with confidence follows directly from its wild habitat: this is a coldwater fish that needs cool, clean, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water, not the warm, still community tank that many loach-shaped fish get lumped into by default. A setup built around it should mimic a mountain stream — strong flow, high dissolved oxygen, a gravel or stone substrate, and stable cool temperatures rather than tropical heating.
As with other stone loaches, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many standard fish treatments, so any medicating should be done cautiously and at reduced strength. Given how little is documented about this species, anyone who does encounter it in the trade should treat husbandry as an open question best answered conservatively — cold, clean, fast water and gentle handling — rather than assumed.
Conservation
Triplophysa nasalis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a small, remote, high-altitude Central Asian stream species: much of the Triplophysa radiation is poorly studied, and many congeners known from single watersheds have never been formally assessed for conservation status either.

Given the general vulnerability of narrow-range mountain-stream endemics to water diversion, damming, and habitat degradation, a cautious approach to any wild collection would be warranted, but this profile does not assert a threat level beyond what has actually been documented — which, at present, is nothing.
