Triplophysa ninglangensis is a small stone loach known from the Yalongjiang, a headwater of the upper Yangtze River system in Ninglang County, Yunnan Province, China. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that holds most of the true "stone" or "brook" loaches — bold little benthic micro-predators built for cool, fast, oxygen-rich mountain streams. Triplophysa ninglangensis was described by Wu & Wu in 1988, one of many stone loaches named from Yunnan's mountain drainages during a period of intensive ichthyological survey work in southwestern China. The species sits within Triplophysa, by far the largest genus of stone loaches, with well over a hundred species spread across the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalaya and the mountain streams of Central and East Asia — many of them, like this one, known only from a single river system.
