Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa obscura was described by Wang in 1987, in a publication on the fishes of the Qinling Mountain area produced through the Shaanxi (historically romanised Shanxi) Institute of Zoology. The genus Triplophysa is enormous and still being actively revised — many of its several hundred species were originally placed in the older, broader genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus before the group was split apart through the late twentieth century, and the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority on valid names, is the reference to check for the current combination of any given species.
The species sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. This is by far the largest loach family by species count, and Triplophysa is one of its largest genera, concentrated in the high country of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Tian Shan and Central Asian ranges, and outlying mountain systems such as the Qinling that separates the Yellow River and Yangtze drainages in central China. Morphology
Triplophysa obscura is a small, elongate stone loach reaching a reported maximum of about 5.5 in standard length — a solid size for a nemacheilid, though as with most members of the genus the great majority of individuals seen in surveys are considerably smaller.
