Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa qilianensis was formally described in 2015 by Li, Chen and Hu of the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the journal Zootaxa. The type locality is the Heihe River in the Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, China — a river system draining the Qilian Mountains, for which the species is named (qilianensis, "of the Qilian").
It sits in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of small-bodied species spread across cool, fast-flowing streams of Asia. Triplophysa is itself an enormous genus, radiating extensively across the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding highlands, where many species are narrow-range endemics restricted to single river systems or even single springs. T. qilianensis fits that pattern closely: it is known only from its Heihe River type locality region.
Morphology
The original description characterizes T. qilianensis as a long, laterally compressed loach reaching about 4.5 in in standard length. The head is proportionally moderate, measuring roughly 20–23% of standard length, and the caudal fin is forked. As in other Triplophysa, the skin is smooth and effectively scaleless, and the posterior chamber of the air bladder is degenerated — a reduction seen in a number of plateau nemacheilids adapted to cold, fast-flowing water.
The cache does not record whether this species carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of many loaches; where present in Nemacheilidae that spine is generally small compared to the botiids. What is well documented is the near-scaleless skin, which — as in loaches generally — makes the species sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, a point that matters for any captive care.
Habitat
This is a high-altitude cold-water fish, known from the Heihe River above roughly 3,000 metres on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. FishBase records a summer water temperature around 61 °F in its native reach — decisively a coldwater environment, not the warm lowland streams that many other loach groups occupy. It lives in riffles of turbid, fast-flowing water, gripping the substrate against a strong current.
The species has not been reported outside the Heihe system, and given the narrow-endemic pattern typical of plateau Triplophysa, it is reasonable to treat it as a single-river specialist until further surveys say otherwise. Nothing in the available sources suggests a wider range, and the entry is left conservative rather than extrapolated.
Feeding
FishBase lists a trophic level around 3.1, consistent with a micro-predator that forages over the streambed for small invertebrates — its recorded diet includes ants and other hymenopterans, alongside the aquatic insect larvae and small crustaceans typical of nemacheilid loaches in fast, clear water. This is a benthic hunter, not a grazer or an opportunistic scavenger.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species specifically, but the broader stone-loach pattern holds: small live and frozen invertebrate foods that sink to the bottom would suit it far better than flake, which such fish often ignore entirely.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Triplophysa qilianensis in the sources available. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a group are egg-scatterers rather than pair-forming or cave-guarding fish, releasing eggs over gravel and stones in flowing water without forming lasting pair bonds, but this species-specific detail has not been recorded and should not be assumed beyond the family pattern.
Breeding
Consistent with stone and brook loaches generally, T. qilianensis is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. No spawning has been documented in the aquarium or in captivity for this species, and given its narrow high-altitude range and near-total absence from the aquarium trade, it should be considered essentially unbred in captivity. Data on its reproductive biology remain sparse, and this entry reports that honestly rather than filling the gap with assumption.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa qilianensis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it does not appear to be traded, and its extreme, narrow, cold-water habitat (a single high-altitude river system with summer temperatures around 61 °F) makes it a poor fit for typical tropical fishkeeping. Any keeper attempting it would need to replicate genuinely cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water rather than a standard heated aquarium, and, as with other scaleless loaches, would need to be cautious with copper-based and full-strength medications.
