Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa qiubeiensis was described by Li and Yang in 2008, one of dozens of Triplophysa species named from the karst cave systems of southern China over the last two decades. The genus Triplophysa sits in family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with the bulk of its diversity concentrated across the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalaya and the limestone karst of southern China and Southeast Asia. The genus name itself is honest about the group's character: many older records under Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been resolved into Triplophysa, Schistura, Barbatula and other segregate genera as the family's taxonomy has been repeatedly revised.
The species epithet qiubeiensis is a toponym, naming Qiubei County in Yunnan Province, the type locality. It is one of more than 30 troglobitic (cave-dwelling) Triplophysa species now known from the karst regions of southern China, a radiation driven by repeated, independent colonisation of underground streams across the region. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination, and it is retained here as Triplophysa qiubeiensis with no synonymy noted in the cached sources.
Morphology
This is a small loach — FishBase reports a maximum standard length of about 3.5 in — with the slender, cylindrical, nearly scaleless body typical of Nemacheilidae. Like other cave-adapted members of the genus, it shows the hallmark troglobitic suite: eyes that are highly degenerated rather than fully absent, and a body lacking normal pigmentation, consistent with a life spent entirely without light. The genus as a whole is adapted to cold water across the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent uplands, and the cave lineages carry that cold-water physiology into a lightless, thermally stable underground setting. Feeding

There is no evidence it is collected for the trade, and given its single known locality and conservation status, it should stay out of it.

Karst cave systems in southern China face pressure from groundwater development, agricultural runoff, tourism infrastructure and general habitat disturbance, all of which can degrade the highly specific, stable conditions cave-adapted fish depend on. As a troglobitic endemic with nowhere else to go, T. qiubeiensis is entirely dependent on the integrity of its one known cave stream being maintained.
