Triplophysa sellaefer is a little-known stone loach from a single river system in northern China, first described by John Treadwell Nichols in 1925 and originally placed in the old catch-all genus Nemachilus. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that holds the true "stone" or "brook" loaches — small, bold, benthic micro-predators built for cool, fast, oxygen-rich water. Almost nothing about this species has made it into the aquarium hobby: it has no dedicated care profile on the usual loach and cichlid hobby sites, and even FishBase leaves its size, breeding and detailed diet fields blank. What is documented is an IUCN assessment of Least Concern from 2024 and a distribution tied to the Yellow River drainage in Hebei Province. This is an honestly data-sparse species, and the safest approach is to say so rather than to guess at care details it does not have evidence for.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa sellaefer was described by the American ichthyologist John Treadwell Nichols in 1925, originally as Nemachilus sellaefer — Nemachilus (also spelled Noemacheilus in some older literature) being the broad genus that nineteenth- and twentieth-century workers used for most Eurasian stone loaches before the group was split apart. As with the great majority of its former Nemachilus relatives, later taxonomic revision moved the species into Triplophysa, the large genus of Central and East Asian stone loaches that now carries several hundred species, many of them from the Tibetan Plateau and its river systems. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, Triplophysa sellaefer, and that is the name used here; the old "Nemachilus sellaefer" combination should be understood as a historical synonym rather than a correction to make.

The species sits in family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which is by species count the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea — on the order of 790 species, the great majority of them small, cryptic, single-drainage endemics scattered across Eurasia. A mitochondrial genome study places T. sellaefer as closely related to Triplophysa alticeps, consistent with the pattern of many Triplophysa species being narrowly distributed, closely related sister taxa restricted to neighbouring drainages.

Morphology
