Taxonomy & naming
Severtsov's loach was described by the Russian ichthyologist Aleksandr Nikolskii in 1938, and for much of the twentieth century it circulated in the older, broad genus Nemacheilus (also transliterated Noemacheilus) — a catch-all grouping that historic literature and some database entries still record as "Nemacheilus sewerzowi." As with most of the family, later revision split that old genus apart by anatomy and geography, and the species now sits in Triplophysa, the huge, still-expanding genus of stone loaches that dominates the streams and glacial rivers of Central Asia, the Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, Triplophysa sewerzowi.
The species epithet honours Nikolai Alekseyevich Severtsov, the nineteenth-century Russian naturalist and explorer of Central Asia's mountains and rivers, after whom a number of the region's animals are named. The genus name, from the Greek for "triple" and "bladder," refers to anatomical features of the family's swim bladder used to separate Triplophysa from its relatives — a technical distinction rather than anything visible on a living fish.
Morphology
Triplophysa sewerzowi is a small, elongate stone loach, reported at around 1.5 in standard length — modest even by the standards of a family built from small fish. Like other members of Nemacheilidae it has a slender, rounded-to-slightly-compressed body suited to holding position on the streambed in current, a subterminal mouth set for picking food off stones and gravel, and paired barbels around the mouth for finding prey by touch.
