Triplophysa shilinensis is a small, blind, unpigmented stone loach known only from a single flooded cave in Yunnan Province, China — one of the most extreme habitats any loach occupies. Described by Chen and Yang in 1992 from specimens taken in Weiboyi Cave near Shilin, it belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone-and-brook-loach family, and shows the classic troglobitic package: no functional eyes, reduced or absent pigment, and a slender, near-scaleless body built for feeling its way through total darkness rather than seeing through it. It is not an aquarium fish in any real sense — it is a data-sparse cave endemic, and almost nothing is documented about its life in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa shilinensis was described by Chen and Yang in 1992, with its holotype (2.5 in SL) and a paratype (2.5 in SL) collected from Weiboyi Cave near Weiboyi Village, close to the town of Shilin (historically romanized Lunan) in Yunnan Province, southern China. The species name shilinensis simply marks the type locality. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, the large and still-expanding genus of Asian stone loaches within the family Nemacheilidae — the true stone-and-brook loaches, now recognized as the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. No historical placement in the older genera Nemachilus or Noemacheilus is documented for this species; it was erected directly in Triplophysa, which the Catalog of Fishes continues to treat as the valid genus.

T. shilinensis belongs to a cluster of blind, cave-adapted Triplophysa described from karst caves in and around Yunnan. Morphological work links it most closely to T. yunnanensis and T. gejiuensis, two other eyeless cave species, and suggests T. gejiuensis in turn shares a common ancestor with the epigean (surface-dwelling), sighted species T. nanpanjiangensis — a pattern consistent with repeated, independent colonization of caves by surface stone loaches across this karst region of southern China.

Morphology

Like other cave-adapted members of its genus, Triplophysa shilinensis shows the textbook signs of life spent entirely without light: it lacks functional eyes and carries little or no body pigmentation, leaving it pale rather than patterned. The known specimens are modest in size, with the holotype and paratype both around 2.5 in standard length, in keeping with the generally small size typical of Nemacheilidae. As a member of this family it is a slender, elongate, near-scaleless loach with a suborbital spine — though in a blind cave form the usual visual cues keepers rely on to judge condition and behaviour are simply not available to the fish itself.

Because the species is known from only a handful of museum specimens and has not been the subject of aquarium observation, fine details of fin structure, barbel count and other diagnostic features are not summarized here; readers wanting full morphometric data should consult the original 1992 description. What is documented is consistent with the wider pattern in Triplophysa's cave lineages: reduction of the eyes and pigment as adaptations to permanent darkness, traded against no obvious loss of the sensory barbels and lateral-line system that let stone loaches navigate and feed by touch.

Habitat

This species is known only from its type locality: Weiboyi Cave, near Weiboyi Village outside Shilin, in the karst country of Yunnan Province, China (approximately 24°47'N, 103°22'E). The cave holds a shaft reported at around 358 ft deep that intersects an underground river, and the loaches were taken from that subterranean stream, in shallow water roughly 1 ft deep with a modest current of about 1 ft/s. This is classic South China karst cave habitat — cool, completely dark, oxygenated groundwater flowing through limestone passages, isolated from surface light and from the seasonal temperature and flow swings that shape rivers above ground.

No population outside this single cave system has been documented, which is typical of the region's blind Triplophysa: many were described from one cave or a small cluster of connected passages and have not been found anywhere else. That extreme range restriction, rather than any single obvious threat, is the defining feature of the species' conservation picture.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Triplophysa shilinensis has not been documented, which is unsurprising for a fish known only from a handful of preserved specimens taken from a single cave. Stone loaches in this genus are generally bottom-oriented micro-predators, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — from the substrate using well-developed barbels and a keen sense of touch and smell rather than sight, an approach well suited to a species that spends its entire life in darkness. Cave ecosystems are food-poor relative to surface streams, dependent on whatever organic material and small invertebrate life washes or drifts in from above, so cave-adapted Triplophysa likely forage opportunistically on whatever is available rather than specializing narrowly.

Nothing is recorded about feeding behaviour in captivity, since the species is not established in the aquarium trade or in research culture as far as documented sources show.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Triplophysa shilinensis. What is known comes from broader studies of the genus: male Triplophysa in general show marked secondary sexual characteristics during breeding condition, including tubercle-bearing skin on the sides of the head and thickened, tuberculate pads on the dorsal surface of the pectoral-fin rays, used in courtship and possibly in maintaining contact with the female during spawning. Whether this cave species retains the same tuberculate breeding dress as its sighted relatives — where such signals would have no visual function in permanent darkness — is not documented and would be a genuinely interesting open question.

Given the species' extreme habitat and the near-total absence of husbandry data, nothing specific can be said about breeding triggers, seasonality or pairing behaviour in T. shilinensis; this is honestly unknown territory.

Breeding

Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no nest-building, no cave-guarding male and no parental care of eggs or fry afterward — a pattern shared across the family rather than anything unique to this species. There is no record of Triplophysa shilinensis being bred, or even reliably kept, in an aquarium setting; as a cave endemic known from a single locality and a handful of museum specimens, it sits far outside the ordinary aquarium trade and hobby-breeding literature.

The honest summary is that breeding data for this species is essentially absent. If it follows the pattern of its genus and family, spawning would be egg-scattering with no parental care, but the specific conditions, temperature, and timing that would trigger it in this permanently dark, cool cave-stream environment are undocumented.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa shilinensis is not a hobby aquarium fish. It is not known to be traded, and given its status as a range-restricted cave endemic collected only for scientific description, keeping it is neither realistic nor appropriate. This entry exists to document the species rather than to recommend or discourage husbandry.

For context, cave and karst-adapted stone loaches in general are cool-water, well-oxygenated, low-light or lightless specialists — the opposite of a typical warm, well-lit community tank — and like other nemacheilids they are essentially scaleless, which in related, kept species translates to high sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments. None of that has been tested or documented specifically for this species, but it is the reasonable expectation based on its family and its cave-adapted relatives.

Conservation

Triplophysa shilinensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. This is common among the narrow-range cave loaches of Yunnan's karst region, many of which have never been formally assessed despite being known from only one locality.

The species' entire known population is confined to Weiboyi Cave and its underground river near Shilin. A single-cave endemic of this kind is inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of that one site — groundwater pollution, changes to cave hydrology, quarrying or development of karst terrain, or even uncontrolled cave tourism — even though no specific documented threat or population decline is on record here. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species; its conservation concerns, to the extent they exist, are about protecting a unique subterranean habitat rather than collection pressure.
