Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa shiyangensis was described by Zhao and Wang in 1983. It sits within Triplophysa, by far the largest genus of stone loaches, with well over a hundred described species spread across the Tibetan Plateau and the mountain drainages of Central and East Asia — a radiation still being actively revised as ichthyologists work through material long lumped under older names such as Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination, and the species remains placed in Triplophysa there.
The species name shiyangensis refers directly to its home water, the Shiyang He (Shiyang River), signalling from the outset that this is a locality endemic rather than a widespread species. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — the largest loach family by species count, and one dominated by small, drab, hardy-looking fish that are nonetheless often extremely narrow in range and poorly studied outside of regional ichthyological surveys.
Morphology
Like other Triplophysa, T. shiyangensis is a slender, elongate, cylindrical loach built for holding position on the bottom of fast water rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum length of about 4 in total length, making it a modestly sized member of the genus. Its trophic level has been estimated at 3.1 ± 0.4, consistent with a benthic feeder taking small invertebrates rather than a strict grazer.
As with its Nemacheilidae relatives, the skin is effectively naked — the scales are minute and deeply embedded, if present at all — which is a defining trait of the family and one with direct consequences for how sensitive these fish are to medication. Detailed published morphological description beyond the type material is sparse; much of what is known comes from regional Chinese ichthyological literature rather than aquarium-facing sources, so finer points of colour pattern and fin structure are not confidently documented here.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Shiyang He river system in the Qilian Mountains of Gansu Province, northwestern China — a single drainage, not a wide range. It is a demersal, flowing-water fish of temperate climate, in keeping with the broader pattern for Triplophysa, many of which are adapted to the cool temperatures and comparatively oxygen-scarce conditions of high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau streams.
Genus-wide, Triplophysa are mountain-stream specialists: cool to cold, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over gravel and stone substrate, often at elevation. No published temperature range specific to T. shiyangensis was found in the sources consulted, so exact figures for this species should be treated as an informed estimate from its habitat and relatives rather than a measured value — but it is unambiguously a coldwater to cool-temperate river fish, not a warm lowland or blackwater species.
Feeding
Triplophysa shiyangensis is a benthic micro-predator. Its trophic level estimate (3.1 ± 0.4) points to a diet of small invertebrates picked from the streambed — likely insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey typical of cool, fast, clear mountain streams, though a species-specific dietary study was not found among the available sources.
In keeping with this feeding style, an aquarium diet for this type of loach would need to lean on small sinking live and frozen foods (bloodworm, small crustaceans) alongside sinking pellets, since dedicated bottom feeders of fast water do not reliably compete for food at the surface and may ignore flake altogether.
Mating
No sex-specific external differences have been documented for this species in the sources reviewed, and dimorphism data is simply not published. For the genus as a whole, spawning in the wild is seasonal, occurring in spring and summer within stream riffles and cued by rising water temperature and flow — the same seasonal triggers that drive breeding across much of the Nemacheilidae.
Given how little is published on this particular species, its own spawning behaviour, courtship, and any sexual dimorphism should be considered undocumented rather than assumed; the pattern described here is inferred from the wider genus, not confirmed observation of T. shiyangensis itself.
Breeding
Stone and brook loaches like Triplophysa shiyangensis are egg-scatterers with no parental care, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing riffles during the spring–summer spawning season. There is no cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour in this group — that belongs to entirely different fish families — and nothing in the available literature suggests otherwise for this species.
T. shiyangensis has no recorded aquarium breeding history. As a narrow-range endemic that is not established in the trade, it should be assumed rarely or never bred in captivity; data on this point is genuinely sparse, and honesty about that gap is preferable to inventing a breeding account that does not exist in the sources.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa shiyangensis has no meaningful presence in the aquarium hobby — it is not recorded as an established trade species, and there is no aquaculture history for it. Any aquarium account is therefore extrapolated from its biology rather than from keeper experience: as a coldwater, high-flow, high-oxygen mountain-stream specialist, it would need a flow-through or heavily aerated cool-water setup mimicking a fast riffle, not a standard heated community tank — precisely the setup mismatch that undoes most stone and brook loaches when they are mistakenly kept warm and still.
Where Nemacheilidae are kept at all, the near-scaleless skin common to the family means sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Given the total absence of hobby data for this exact species, the responsible summary is simple: T. shiyangensis is a scientifically documented mountain-stream endemic, not a fish with an aquarium track record.
Conservation
Triplophysa shiyangensis is listed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (DD), assessed in 2024. The assessment notes a restricted range confined to a single river system, which leaves the species vulnerable to localized environmental change even though its resilience is ranked medium, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years.
As a single-drainage endemic of the Shiyang He in Gansu Province, its conservation outlook is tied directly to the health of that one river system — water abstraction, damming or pollution affecting the Shiyang He would disproportionately affect this species precisely because it has nowhere else to go. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; it simply has not been reported in that trade.
