Triplophysa strauchii is a cold-water stone loach from the inland basins of Central Asia, living in the fast, clear, alpine-fed streams and lake margins that drain the northern Tianshan and the wider Balkhash-Issyk-Kul-Zaysan system. Unlike many of its single-stream relatives in the sprawling family Nemacheilidae, it is genuinely widespread across several closed drainage basins spanning Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and China's Xinjiang region, and it is assessed Least Concern rather than data-deficient. It is a slim, mottled bottom-dweller built for gripping cobble in current, feeding on small invertebrates picked off the streambed, and it is rarely seen in the aquarium trade — a demanding coldwater specialist rather than a community fish.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the Russian zoologist Karl Fyodorovich Kessler in 1874, initially placed in the now-defunct genus Nemachilus and later shuffled into Noemacheilus as the taxonomy of Eurasian stone loaches was repeatedly revised through the twentieth century. Both names still appear in older literature and museum records. Modern taxonomy, following the Catalog of Fishes, places it in Triplophysa, the large genus of Central and East Asian stone loaches within the family Nemacheilidae — itself the largest of the loach families, encompassing the small, mostly scaleless "stone" or "brook" loaches of Eurasian streams.

GBIF and current ichthyological references list Triplophysa strauchii (Kessler, 1874) as the accepted combination. The genus Triplophysa has undergone extensive splitting as regional faunas have been re-examined, and readers encountering the older names Nemachilus strauchii or Noemacheilus strauchii in field guides or older aquarium literature should treat them as synonyms of this species. The name Triplophysa pedaschenkoi is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Triplophysa strauchii is an elongate, low-slung loach with the near-scaleless skin typical of Nemacheilidae and the small, downturned mouth of a benthic grazer-predator, ringed with barbels for probing the substrate. FishBase records a maximum length of about 10 in total length, though field-collected populations run considerably smaller: a study of a Sayram Lake (Xinjiang) population of 768 fish found body lengths averaging around 4 in SL, with the largest individuals reaching roughly 5.5 in.

As in many nemacheilids, an erectile suborbital spine sits beneath the eye — a small, mobile spine rather than the larger fixed spine of the botiid loaches, used defensively rather than as a weapon. Recent research on this species has also documented habitat-driven sexual dimorphism: fish from stream habitats and fish from oxbow-lake habitats show measurably different body proportions, likely reflecting the different competitive and resource conditions of flowing versus still water rather than sex alone.

Habitat

This is a cold-water fish of Central Asia's closed inland drainages, recorded from the basins of Lake Balkhash, Issyk-Kul, Sassyk-Kul, Alakul' and Lake Zaysan, and from the Tarim Basin of Xinjiang, China. It lives in clear, well-oxygenated, benthopelagic water — fast alpine and foothill streams draining the northern slopes of the Tianshan range, as well as lake-margin habitat such as Sayram Lake, a high-altitude lake in Xinjiang where a well-studied population occurs.

Water in these systems is cold and neutral, and the species tolerates a considerable seasonal temperature swing tied to snowmelt and altitude. It is not a tropical or blackwater fish: this is a temperate, oxygen-demanding stream and lake species, and its distribution across multiple separate basins (rather than a single stream) makes it one of the more broadly distributed members of a family otherwise dominated by narrow-range endemics.

Feeding

Triplophysa strauchii is a benthic micro-predator, working the stream and lake bottom for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey typical of clear, cold, well-oxygenated water. This diet fits the general pattern for Nemacheilidae: active foraging over cobble, gravel and sediment rather than grazing algae or biofilm.

In the aquarium it takes small live and frozen foods readily — bloodworm, small crustaceans and similar sinking fare — and may be selective about or ignore dried flake. A keeper taking this species on should plan on live or frozen foods delivered to the bottom rather than relying on flake alone.

Mating

Specific courtship behaviour has not been documented in the sources available for this species. It is oviparous, and habitat and food availability appear to strongly influence reproductive condition — the source population data note that abundant food and suitable cold-stream conditions are prerequisites for reproductive capacity, consistent with a species whose breeding is tightly tied to seasonal alpine stream conditions rather than a fixed courtship ritual known from aquarium observation.

Age-structure data from the Sayram Lake population show fish reaching maturity within a few years and living to at least seven years, with females tending to dominate the older (3-4 year) age classes and males the younger (2-3 year) classes — suggestive of differing life-history strategies between the sexes, though this has not been resolved into a clear account of pairing or spawning behaviour.

Breeding

Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Triplophysa strauchii is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, releasing eggs over gravel and stones in fast, cold water. It is rarely bred in captivity, and the available sources do not document a successful aquarium spawning of this species — consistent with the honest picture for Nemacheilidae generally, where captive reproduction is uncommon and often unrecorded even for well-studied populations.

What is documented is that reproductive capacity in the wild is closely linked to habitat quality: fish in food-rich, suitable cold-stream conditions show better reproductive condition than those under habitat stress. For a prospective keeper, the realistic expectation is a long-lived, interesting bottom-dweller rather than a breeding project — this is a species to keep for its natural history, not to spawn.

In the aquarium

This is a demanding coldwater specialist and is rare in the aquarium trade. Sources recommend a tank of at least 45 US gal for an adult, reaching up to 8–10 in, kept at a genuinely cool 54–68 °F and a neutral pH of roughly 7.0-7.2 — far cooler than the tropical setups most loach keepers are used to, and outside the range of an ordinary heated community tank. It needs strong water movement, high oxygenation and pristine water quality; the species is noted as sensitive to pollution and habitat changes, so stability matters more than any single parameter.

As with other near-scaleless nemacheilids, caution with medications and copper-based treatments is warranted even though this is not explicitly detailed in available sources for this species. Given its size, cold-water requirements and scarcity in the trade, it suits a dedicated coldwater or unheated streamtank setup rather than a typical tropical community — a fish for a keeper specifically set up for alpine or subtropical stream conditions.

Conservation

Triplophysa strauchii is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN (2020), reflecting its comparatively wide distribution across several Central Asian basins rather than confinement to a single vulnerable stream, which sets it apart from many narrow-range Nemacheilidae. FishBase also notes low vulnerability to fishing pressure, though its resilience is rated low, with an estimated population doubling time of 4.5 to 14 years — meaning that if local populations are depleted, recovery would be slow.

Threats noted for the species include habitat degradation, pollution, water-flow alteration and vegetation destruction across its range of inland Central Asian drainages. It is rare in the aquarium trade, so collection for the hobby is not considered a meaningful pressure; the more relevant risks are the broader water-management and pollution pressures facing Central Asia's closed-basin lake and stream systems.
