Triplophysa tianeensis is a tiny stone loach known only from a single underground river system in Guangxi, southern China — a fish that lives its whole life without seeing daylight. It reaches barely 2.5 in and belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest family of true loaches, a group of small, bold, benthic micro-predators of cool, fast, oxygen-rich water. This particular species has taken that lifestyle to an extreme, moving permanently into the karst caves and spring-fed subterranean channels that riddle the limestone of Tiane County. It is not, and has never been, an aquarium fish; what is known about it comes entirely from ichthyological fieldwork and museum specimens, and much of its biology remains genuinely undescribed.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa tianeensis was described in 2004 by Chen, Cui and Yang, with the species epithet drawn directly from Tiane County (formerly romanized Tian'e), the Guangxi locality where it was collected. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, by far the largest genus of stone loaches, with several hundred described species spread across the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalaya, and the karst uplands of southern and western China — many of them, like this one, narrow-range endemics tied to a single spring, cave system or headwater stream.

The genus belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was itself split out of the old broad Cobitidae in the twentieth century and remains under active revision as Chinese karst ichthyofauna continues to be surveyed. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination, and it recognizes Triplophysa tianeensis as a distinct, valid species; nothing in the available record suggests a need to correct or update the genus assignment given here.

Morphology

This is a small fish even by stone-loach standards, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2.5 in standard length. Like other members of its genus it has the classic nemacheilid build: an elongate, slightly compressed body, a small subterminal mouth suited to picking food off the substrate, and paired barbels around the mouth used to feel out prey in low light or darkness. Nemacheilids lack the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra and kin) — that spine belongs to a different family entirely — and their skin, like most true loaches, carries minimal scale cover, leaving them sensitive to medications and salt.

Detailed morphological description of T. tianeensis specifically is limited in the available literature, but closely related Triplophysa cave loaches from the same karst region of southwestern China — including T. anshuiensis and T. wulongensis — show pronounced troglomorphic adaptation: reduced pigmentation and, in the most extreme cases, reduced or absent eyes, reflecting a permanent life in the dark of underground rivers. Whether T. tianeensis shows comparable reduction is not confirmed in the sources available here; this is honestly a data-sparse point rather than a confirmed trait, and it should not be assumed without a direct description.

Habitat

Triplophysa tianeensis is known only from an underground river of the Hongshuihe drainage in Tiane County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in the karst uplands of southern China. The type locality and subsequent records come from subterranean spring and seepage channels within limestone cave systems — genuinely hypogean habitat, with little or no natural light, cool-to-cool-temperate water, and typically high dissolved oxygen from the constant flow of spring-fed streams moving through the rock.

This is a coldwater-to-cool-water fish of clear, fast, well-oxygenated underground streams, not a warm, still, blackwater species — a distinction worth being explicit about, since the karst caves of Guangxi run notably cooler and more oxygen-rich than the lowland rivers many hobby loaches come from. Its entire known range is a single drainage system, which is the central fact shaping both its conservation status and how little is understood about it: it has essentially never been the subject of an ecological field study beyond the original description and subsequent taxonomic work on the region's cave loaches.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Triplophysa tianeensis appears in the available literature. Based on the well-documented feeding ecology of related Triplophysa and other nemacheilid stone loaches, it is reasonable to describe it as a benthic micro-predator, picking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other invertebrate prey from the substrate of its cave stream, likely supplemented by biofilm and organic material washed into the system. Its barbels would serve this role well in a lightless environment where sight is of little use for foraging.

This should be read as an inference from its genus and ecological setting rather than a directly observed diet for this species — the honest position, given how little fieldwork exists on this particular cave population.

Mating

Nothing specific to Triplophysa tianeensis has been documented about courtship, sexing or spawning behavior; the species has not been studied in this respect, and there is no aquarium history to draw on. Stone and brook loaches in this genus are, where known, seasonal egg-scatterers with no pair-bonding behavior beyond the act of spawning itself, but confirming that pattern for this specific cave-dwelling population is beyond what the available sources support.

Breeding

As with most Nemacheilidae, the expected pattern for Triplophysa tianeensis is that of an egg-scatterer: eggs released over gravel or stone substrate in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. This is inferred from the genus rather than confirmed for the species — there is no record of it, or of a closely comparable cave-dwelling Triplophysa, being bred in captivity, and given its extreme habitat specialization to a single underground river system, it is unlikely ever to enter the aquarium hobby. The honest summary is that breeding biology here is essentially unknown, and any statement beyond "egg-scattering, no parental care, genus-typical" would be guesswork.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa tianeensis has no aquarium history and is not part of the ornamental fish trade. It is a narrow-range cave endemic collected only for scientific survey work, and nothing in the sources reviewed here suggests it has ever been kept or bred outside a research context. Speculating about tank size, water parameters or husbandry for a fish with no aquarium record would go beyond what can honestly be said; the accurate note for a keeper or reader is simply that this species belongs to science, not to the hobby.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Triplophysa tianeensis as Vulnerable (VU) on 17 January 2024, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) — reflecting a very limited geographic range (extent and area of occupancy) combined with an inferred continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. This fits the profile of many single-system karst cave endemics in southern China: the entire known population depends on the ecological integrity of one underground river drainage, making it inherently vulnerable to changes in water quality, groundwater extraction, quarrying or other karst-landscape disturbance in Tiane County.

There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species — it is not traded — so the relevant conservation concerns are strictly habitat-based: protecting the hydrology and water quality of the Hongshuihe underground river system that this fish, and likely other undescribed karst specialists, depend on entirely.
