Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa tianlinensis was described in 2016 by Li, Li, Lan and Du in the journal Ichthyological Research (volume 64, pages 295–300), from specimens collected in a cave near Hongxing Village, Langping Town, Tianlin County, in China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region — the type locality that gives the species its epithet. It was placed directly in the genus Triplophysa, with no earlier combination in Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus on record for this particular species.
Triplophysa is the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, and is centered on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the inland waters of central Asia, a region riddled with karst caves that have produced a whole radiation of blind or reduced-eye troglobitic species within the genus. T. tianlinensis is one of these specialized cave endemics rather than a surface stream fish, and its description sits alongside a small but growing list of Chinese cave Triplophysa named over the past two decades.
Morphology
The description characterizes T. tianlinensis as fully troglomorphic: the body is unpigmented and smooth-skinned, essentially scaleless, an adaptation shared with many nemacheilids but taken further here by the total loss of colour that comes with permanent cave life. The eyes are reduced, consistent with a species that has spent its evolutionary history in complete darkness where vision offers little advantage.
Among the diagnostic features separating it from close relatives, the original description notes that the tip of the pectoral fin does not reach the pelvic-fin origin, the dorsal fin carries 8–9 branched rays, and there is a distinct black pigmented marking noted in the description despite the fish's otherwise depigmented body. The lateral line is complete, running the full length of the body — a sensory adaptation that matters more, not less, in a lightless cave where the fish must navigate and detect prey without sight.
Habitat
This species is known only from a cave system near Hongxing Village in Tianlin County, Guangxi, in the karst landscape of southern China — a region honeycombed with limestone caves and underground streams that has produced numerous other troglobitic Triplophysa. Related cave-dwelling Triplophysa have been recorded 200–450 metres into cave tunnels, in cool, still-to-slow subterranean water; a related species, T. erythraea, has been recorded at around 56 °F and pH 6.0, giving a useful reference point for the kind of cool, stable cave water this genus favours underground.
Cave streams like this are food-poor, low-energy environments compared with surface rivers, buffered from seasonal temperature swings but offering little in the way of light, algae or plant growth. Nothing about this habitat resembles the fast, sunlit hillstreams of surface-dwelling relatives; it is a specialized, isolated, single-site environment, and the population's entire world is likely confined to one connected cave system.
Feeding
No dietary data specific to T. tianlinensis has been recorded. Cave nemacheilids in general are presumed to feed on whatever small invertebrate life persists in these food-poor subterranean systems — cave-adapted crustaceans, insect larvae, and organic material washed in from the surface — foraging by touch and the lateral-line system rather than sight, since photoreceptors offer little use in permanent darkness. This is an inference from the biology of troglobitic loaches generally rather than a documented finding for this species, and it should be read as such.
Mating
No information on courtship, spawning behaviour, or reproductive biology has been published for Triplophysa tianlinensis. As a single-cave endemic that has never been kept or studied outside its original description, essentially nothing is known of how or when this species reproduces in the wild, and no aquarium observations exist to fill the gap.
Breeding
Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches, as a group, are typically egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and are rarely bred even in the aquaria of specialist keepers who work with surface-dwelling species in the genus. There is no reason to expect T. tianlinensis differs in mode, but nothing has actually been documented for this species — it has never been in the aquarium trade and has not been bred or observed spawning by researchers.
Given the total absence of husbandry or reproductive data, the honest position is that this is an unbred, essentially unstudied cave species, not a fish with any breeding record to report.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa tianlinensis is not, and has never been, an aquarium fish. Related cave-dwelling Triplophysa species are explicitly noted in the scientific literature as specialized troglomorphic loaches not found in the aquarium trade, and the same applies here: this is a single-cave-system endemic collected for scientific description, not a species with any keeping history, husbandry data, or commercial availability. Attempting to keep this species would mean working entirely without precedent — no verified temperature range, water chemistry, diet, or tankmate compatibility exists beyond the loose inference that, like other cave Triplophysa, it would need cool, stable, low-light conditions utterly unlike a typical planted or community tank.
Conservation
Triplophysa tianlinensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. It is known only from a single cave system, which by itself is a red flag for extinction risk in any formal assessment framework: species restricted to one cave or one connected karst system are inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of that single site, from groundwater pollution and extraction to cave tourism, quarrying, or changes in the surrounding watershed that alter flow into the cave.
No population trend, threat assessment, or protective status has been published for this species. Its rarity in scientific collections and extremely narrow known range mean it would very plausibly qualify for a threatened category if formally evaluated, but in the absence of that evaluation, Not Evaluated is the only honest classification to give it.
